I tried a "Remington" Marlin Guide Gun last week... That said it, would not group worth a crud with Barnes Vortex 300's or Remington 405 JSP. I think the scope was overkill 4-?x at 100 yards.
The gun itself was smooth, like Marlins are expected to be, relatively low recoil, but 3+ inch groups at 100? Not acceptable for me EVEN given the distance/energy of the .45-70. All factory ammo mind you. The Barnes were very DIRTY and harsher at 300's than the green and yellow 405's.
Thanks for the response and if you have time PM me with your experience with that gun. I was always a fan of the Micro-Groove in the .30-30 (have they change that since switching hands?)

PS: Ejection was not aggressive IMO

I have shot Winchester jacketed hollow point 300 grn and I use Hornady 325 grn lever evolution to hunt with. They both group similarly. a little over an inch at 100 yards. I have killed 6 deer and 8 wild hogs with my 45-70 and it is the only rifle I have used since I bought it. The Winchester ammo came with the gun. The guy I bought it from had crept up on the scope and got hit in the eyebrow by the scope and was afraid of the gun. I bought is scoped wot a Redfield scope and two full boxes of Winchester ammo and one partial box of Remington ammo for $350.00.

OT,
Excellent deal for you!
I have more "beauty marks" than I care to admit Usually, when I'm trying for accuracy with the sharp shoulder rounds!
For the 45-70 I've reloaded some 300 Nosler BT, and a bunch of Speer Hot Cor 350's but I was not able to test on my recent outing for the big finger sized load. :-)

Picked up that Seekins Havak in February as my latest complete rifle. Bought another PT&G blueprinted Remington action this month and a pair of Ruger AR556 lowers, for projects - one will be a 24” 6mm Fat Rat, the other’s future is unknown at this time, and the 700 will be a 6 Dasher, with a 15” pistol barrel and stock, plus a 26” barrel and A3, maybe get my wife talked into shooting some PRS type matches with it.

I think the last one I bought was an HR Ultra Slug Hunter in 12 Ga. I bought the ultralight model. At the time I was stationed in VA and most the area I was in was restricted to shotguns for deer. It was cheaper to buy this one through the military exchange system than to get a slug barrel for my pump. However when I left VA I no longer had a use for it so I sold it there.
Personally my days of buying guns is about over. I don't fully trust the govt with the data. Mine have all been bought years ago or were inherited so I doubt the data went straight into the govt computers. Any purchases now will be filed and will never go away, especially if you are buying any AR type rifle. You know they will track those.
There is only one rifle I would like to get and that's the M1A in 30 Carbine. I think it would make a great truck gun and I've liked every one I've ever shot. But there is that data base thing so unless I can find one and do a face to face no paperwork deal I won't buy it. Sad that it has come to this but I fear it is the reality that will eventually come to face us all. Make no doubt about it, the politicians of both parties are going to make a play for our guns and the data base is where they will start.
