I'm 5'1" also and use a savage 30-06 with either 150 or 180 grain ammo.

My vote goes to a Premium Grade (Think Barnes or Swift 140gr in 7mm-08) , .280 with 160 if she can handle it. Much easier to find the compacts in 7mm-08.

Probably since the heaviest bullet you can get for a 30-06 is 220 gr.

Actually, a 250 grain used to exist. Today there is evidently a 240 match round available, but practically speaking, these days 220 is the ceiling for hunting .30 cal.

270 or 280 w/ 22" barrel.

if 30.06, I'd use any premium bullet that shot well in 150-165-180 grs.

A Savage Axis II chambered in .270 comes stock with an Accutrigger and a weaver scope. I bought mine for $300. Its lightweight, shoots a .66 MOA grouping at 100 yards and is cheap. I have hunted with this gun for years and have enjoyed a lot of Elk meat because of it. The Federal Blue Box 130 Grain Soft Point has been a very cheap ammo that shoots incredibly well with this gun.

My daughter like my .280. While it is not a factory rifle, it is very similar to the Rem Mod 7. Light weight, low recoil, plenty of terminal energy, lots of available ammo, if you reload you can stuff anyting in the case and it will shoot 100 to 175 grainers. I like it for mountain packing for elk and mulies.

The Savage Lady Hunter 7mm-08 would be a very nice Rifle to check out and use....You can also go with the Remington or Hornady Managed Recoil/Lighter Load Bullets for less recoil.
