riffle recommendations
 

Hello Guy's
I am taking a friend tomorrow to play with rifles and need some advise.
My friend plans on deer hunting with me next year in PA then moose the following year.
He is a big boy but claims he is recoil sensitive. I have a 30-06 that kick's lick a freaking
mule and a 300 win mag sendero that kick's like a 30-30 so I am going to have him shoot
them both of them a few times. I wasn't going to let him purchase anything tomorrow
(although that's going to be tuff) but just wanted some advise. I know about fitting &
playing with the gun. I was even thinking about recommending a 338 but Im not sure if he
will ever use the gun again so I don't want him to put much in one (710 here we come).

I always respond to recoil sensitive people the same way. WAR EAR PROTECTION!!!!! All guns kick a little but they're nothing to fear. It's the &quot;BANG&quot;! that makes us shy of the gun not the recoil. For PA and a possible moose hunt for someone who may look at the size of the ammo before shooting it......go with a .308 Mild in the kick dept. and the shell looks little too. The BIG plus is that the .308 is a 30-06 but just slowed down a little bit. Load him up with 165 gr. for whitetail and 180 gr for the moose. You'll never go wrong with the .308 My buddy has downed several elk with the .308 with one shot. (So he says) : )

I second the nomination for .308...fairly gentle on the shoulder, especially so in a semi-auto.

IF HE'S A BIG BOY THEN TURN HIM ON TO A HEAVIER GUN, HE CAN TOTE THE WEIGHT AND THE WEIGHT WILL EAT A LOT OF RECOIL. I'VE GOT A 6# .270 THAT IS PUNISHING COMPARED TO A 9# 300 RUM. I'VE NEVER HUNT MOOSE AND KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THEM, BUT I'M NOT SHOOTING ONE WITH LESS THAN MY RUM.

Consider the 7mm mag as it provides better performance than the 308 or 30-06 with less recoil than the 300 mag.

Why do so many people think a small cali rifle ie 308 can not take down a moose or elk in a swift safe manner???? This bugs me to no end.

The 308 will be fine for you &quot;big boy &quot;friend. I'll go with what Penobscot said about the plugs in the ears and take it one step further. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN AT THE RANGE!!! I think most people are not recoil shy they are scope kiss shy. All to well we hear of the person who got a LITTLE to close to the scope relief and bingo got a scope kiss in the brow.

I'm no expert but i think there is only a few pounds diffrence in the .308 and the .06 for felt recoil

A little tickler. A buddy I work with took his 12 year old son out to the range to get used to Dads 300 mag. That skinny little kid all of 110 pounds out shot his dad. The secert is no fear!
