I would quess the advantage of the 338-06 would be simular performance with much less powder and recoil. I have toyed with the Idea of the Encore barrel in that caliber as well as the 6mm-06. My Hodgdon manual shows the 338-06 just 97 fps behind the 338 Win Mag with 16 grains less powder. They consider it adequate for all North American game including the great Bears.

If there is so much demand for this cartridge then why arent more rifles being chambered in it?
Yes that' s true, but that same statement could also have been said of the .22-250, the .25-06, and the .35 Whelen and probably several others I have temporarily forgotten.

I' d have far preferred to have had Remington bought out LIGHTWEIGHT sporting guns for the 6.5-06 and the .338-06 than the ultramags.

Guess we all march to a different drummer.....

Because there is the 338Win Mag. About the same loads, but the 338Win mag gets 100fps faster. Really no need for the 338-06. Just wouldn' t really make sense to make a 338-06. I doubt they would sell many unlike the RUM' s and WSM. People wanted a high powered unbelted cartridge, and they got it in both offerings. The mass' s didn' t want a " I am bored and want something different" type cartridge. This is one round I don' t see its place. only place I could have seen it was if it came out before the 338 win mag. I have to admit, I have never shot a 338-06, but can' t imagine the recoil would be that much different from a 338Win Mag loaded to 63gr of H414 with a 250 gr bullet compared to a 338-06 loaded with 60gr of H414 with a 250gr bullet. And I bet velocities would be darn close.

So unless you just want to be different (and I understand that), there is no need.

If the 338-06 were only 100 fps slower it wouldn' t be worth buying a 338...I am seeing 2700fps on a pretty full load with a 200 grain ballistic tip for the 338-06 and 3000 for the same bullet on a 338win... but nevertheless there are a slew of useable cartridges out there that some people desire but evidently not enough to entice some manufacturer to build them... Personally I operate on the Walmart theory....If i go someplace and i shoot all 40 rounds at an Elk or Deer and miss or my ammo gets lost on the flight I can go down to the local walmart and buy 338, 270,06,7 rem mag or 308 win even 300 RUM and 7 RUM and all the short mags but you would probably have a difficult time finding loaded ammo for one of them or even in a well stocked gun shop.

What load is that? I also know people that load the 338 Win mag to 3000fps. But they usually are going over the recommended loads from Hodgdon, IMR. Lo0king at my Hodgdon guide, they have 210gr loads at 2800fps or so. But IMR does list some IMR4350 loads going over 3000fps.

I have not ever used a 200 grain ballistic tip and never chronographed the 338 but I will try it out deer season in Bama....with a 210 partition and then I will chrono it...if the results are like anything else i load for it probably will be way off the load manuals but the same will happen to pretty much any other cartridge.

On a cloudy or partly clouded day my chronograph reads awful close to the Hornady manual. That is providing that the barrel lenghts used are about the same. I have chronographed quite a few 338' s but only with 250 grain bullets. Most loads read 2690-2785. I never had a 338-06 but I have had three 338 Win Mags. Don' t have one anymore.

Looking through my manuals, I' m trying to find where the 338 Winnie is only a 100 fps faster than the 338-06. From what I' ve gathered, it seems to be about 200+ fps (and faster than that) faster in just about every load.
