building a Rem 700

I' m refinishing an old Rem 700 stock and I' d like to try to put togther my own " custom" hunting rifle from scratch. Does anyone have any recomendations as to where I could find a receiver and action (without buying a new rifle)? As far as barrels, I' m looking at Shilen and Douglas barrels from Brownells. Should I go with either of those or a cheaper grade barrel, like Adams and Benett? I' d like to install a quality trigger and pilar and glass bed the barrel and receiver. Any suggestions and precautions would be extremely helpful!!

Thanks!!!

Before you can build a fine custom rifle, you must have a pretty good idea what it is that you want to wind up with. I' ll assure you right now that it' ll cost you more to build one yourself than to buy a new Remington 700 in the caliber you want.

I' d advise you start with a Rem. 700, Win M-70, Browning A- Bolt, or Sake action.

I like Douglas for a barrel supplier and have used others...I keep going back to Douglas. Order your barrel " FTC" to fit your action...this means you don' t have to have a chambering reamer.

There' s a few triggers to choose from but I like Timney...easy to work with and they just seem to be very adjustable.

Go to gunshows and go to a lot of them. Sooner or later you' ll come across a gun that fell out of a scabbard and fell down a mountain and you can buy an action for $100.....at least I have!!!

Go to Brownells for glass bedding and other components....they' re absolutely great to work with.

It' s a fine way to keep you off the streets for an entire winter.
