My personal experience is that almost all remington 700s will shoot 1" or less with good handloads and some considerably better.I have fired rugers winchesters, brownings and savages and the 700's have been as good as any and better than most.

I just purchased a Savage 110 package from Walmart. I'm like you. I wanted an accurate gun without spending a lot of money.

If you're lucky, you may be able to find one at Walmart for under $300 right now. Some of the stores are marking clearance prices on the display case guns.

The gun Walmart is selling includes a Simmons 3-9x30 scope pre-mounted too. I think it's an adequate scope until your budget allows you to buy a nice one. It also include a good set of Uncle Mike's QD sling swivels, but a cheapy nylon sling.

I was originally going to buy a Remington 700ADL. After hearing and reading a lot of good things about the Savage, and the seeing the price difference, I changed my mind.

Sven, how does that gun shoot? I have been looking at getting on of those. Is the scope alright. I was looking at the ones with the leather sling and wooden stock. Is the gun worth is though?

From my experience, Savage. Nothing else comes close. Especially for the price.

Don't forget about Winchester. Bought my son a Winchester package gun from Walmart and it is a very good shooting gun. Had to adjust the trigger and finish sighting the scope in. He just loves his 270. It should last him a lifetime.

I too say, do not over look the Winchester Black Shadow Model 70. Great Rifle. Around $375.00 at Wal-Mart

Savages have the most accurate barrel out of the box and are very accurate rifles. That being said I don't care for them because their bolts are wobbly and triggers stiff. Everything you mentioned, Ruger, Win, Remington, etc. are fine accurate guns and you won't go wrong w/any of them. It all depends on how they feel to you. For me, the best gun out of the box and the one that points and shoots the best is the Encore. I can't describe how comfortable the gun is, it is something that you have to feel.

tonyg welcome to the board!!!!The rifle can only be as accurate as the shooters are!I agree you need a accurate rifle but it's up to the shooter to make it perform. With that said I like my Ruger's, Remington's etc,etc etc...............Ruger Redhawk

I've been thinking about this question.

Uh Oh

Actually I can't think of a production rifle in a bolt action that doesn't shoot better than most people do. All of my rifles shoot better than me.

i have a savage 110 in 3006. it shoots .75 groups. I also read an article a while back that said savage makes the most accurate barrels.

BrandonT,

I just picked the gun up yesterday so I haven't be able to take it back home to try it out yet. As far as the scope, it's nothing special. I think it's something made specifically for Savage because I can't find any reference to it on Simmons' site. Like I said in my original post, it will do for now until I can pony up for a better one. I think the gun is worth the money regardless.

I own a savage 112 22-250 and a 116 300wsm and both will shot under one inch at 100 and the 22-250 will put 5 shots under a nickel at 200. Havent shot the 300 any farther than 100 yet, still breaking it in. I love savage

I once asked a bullet factory technician what
gun he would recommend in the 25.06 since the
gun I just bought a month earlier would not
shoot worth a hoot with any bullet I tried.
I figured he would say Sako or something but
he said buy a Savage and shocked me. Then he
explained why. Well, he was right. Take a
Savage, have it glass bedded and the trigger
worked on buy a gun smith and you have one
accurate hunting rig.

In my opinion Just about any gun can be made to shoot accurately .As to which one is the most accurate it would depend on who you asked because everyone has a opinion . How well you shoot is the main thing in my opinion. Welcome to the board .

The remington model 700 is the most accutate rifle on the market hands down. They also have the best actions and very crisp triggers.

My experience has been Remington so far. 1/2MOA and better in both my .308 & .300Win Mag.

Guys I'm sorry, but I just have to brag a bit in the suject. I have a Browning A-Bolt Stalker II, SS 30-06 with the Boss. I'm getting .500" grouping at 100yrds. I'm even using off the shelf (cheap gray box) Winchester Super X 150 gr ammo. I don't think you can match anything to a rifle with a BOSS, out of the box.

Gotta love it!!!

RE: Rifle Accuracy best out of box

My Rem 700ADL also in .30-06 will match that, also with cheap Winchester SuperX Powerpoints in 165 grains.
Sounds to me like most of the good brands will deliver outstanding accuracy in a fairly low cost bolt action rifle. Remington, Savage, Winchester, Browning take ya pick.

Well i have a marlin 30-30 that will shot 1in groups at 100 yards (factory everthing)

I have a Rem 700bdl 7mm shoots .50 groups at 100 yards (factory everthing)

I have a Savage M112 22-250 shoots .50groups at 100 yards(ditto)

I have a Knight Disc rifle shoots 1in groups at 100 yards (ditto)

Also have a 444. Marlin that will shoot 1.5 to 2.0 inch groups at 100 yards (ditto)

So i think it has more to do with the person behind the gun. I almost forgot

Delt H-Bar 223 1in groups at 200 yards (ditto)

My own knight disc rifle shot 1" groups with 250 gr red hot bullets.I have also seen a factory 700 shoot 1/2" groups (although it was a sendero) with one factory load.

RE: Rifle Accuracy best out of box

I ahve to agree with a lot of the panel on the Savage rifles! They are not the fancy bragging gun as far as looks, but for the average shooter, who shoots at 100 yards or less and uses factory loads, it will match or beat any on the market!
I am a guide and hunter and have had and shot everything from the bottom line Savages to the top line Weatherby's, and the Savage has always hung in there with the best!
As a personal recommendation, the Savage 111, with the heavy barrel, in 30-06, shooting Federal Premium, 165 BTSP, will handle any job you can give it out to 300 yards with incredible accurasy, top it off with something like a Tasco World class, and you got all you need for around $500.
For bigger game I would recommend the Savage 112BVSS, in .300 win mag, again toped with a long Range Tasco, you got all you need, for long range big game and still be around $600-$650.
No matter what you pick, there is no comprimise for practice shooting and most of all safety! Practice shooting at the ranges you will be hunting, know your limitations, most important, IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET, before you take the safety off, and know where your bullit will travel, should you get a pass through shot!
Good luck, be safe, be courteous!

I've got no complaints with my two Winchester M70's. One is a Black Shadow the other is a Lightweight, both were accurate out of the box!
