I BOUGHT THE 700 BDL 300 ULTRA MAG, SHOOTING REMINGTON ULTRA MAG 180 GRAIN NOSLER PARTITION SHELLS FOR THOSE OF YOUS THAT SHOOT THIS CALIBER WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE SHELLS FOR THE GUN,
I BOUGHT THE GUN TO USE THIS YEAR FOR BEAR HUNTING HERE IN PA, AND ELK WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS CALIBER FOR THIS. ALL OPINIONS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED GOOD LUCK THIS SEASON, THANK YOU.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

I own two custom 300ultras built on 700 actions. They produce 3375fps to 3400fps with 180gr handloads and both consistantly shoot 1/2" groups.I have taken 5 elk and 2 moose so far with these rifles and performance has been great.Factory loads however are very mild producing only 3200 fps to 3250fps in most factory rifles and really don' t use this cartridges potential. If I did not handload I probably would not bother with the 300 ultramag for this reason.

Ouch. My bad shoulder can' t take it, but you are well-equipped to take just about anything that walks with a rifle chambered for that cartridge. Your combination that is shooting so well for you should prove absolutely awesome on both bear and elk.

I think you picked a great round for bear & elk. [:-]

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

I have owned two and currently have one on a 700 action with krieger barrel and H-S stock. It is my target and moose gun. Reason I have stuck with it is I got all the loads/knowledge/powder and brass. If I had it to do over, I would stick with the WSM' s. When I reload for friends with the WSM' s, its hard for me to get them to shoot bad. Std Dev in velocity is like 10 to 15fps, which I can never achieve with the RUM' s. The RUM' s are a tad more finicky to develop and seem to change more with temp as compared to 300WSM. I have a 200 gr matchking load that is awesome. Also shot the Accubonds with great success.

For the hunting you are doing, I would buy the WSM' s.

I hate the 300 RUM.[:@] I' ve wanted a 300 Weatherby since I was a pup because it was the baddest 30 out there. When I finally get one, this 300 RUM comes out and my Weatherby no longer looks as good.:D It' s kind of like paying $1000 for a computer and the next year it' s obsolete.:D

My dad has the .300 Remington Ultra Mag. We sight in at 3' ' high at 100yds. We shoot 180 Trophy-Bonded bear claw hand-reloaded shells with 97 grains Alliant Reloader 25 powder. the gun will scare you after shooting a deer at 150 yards, the exit hole will amaze you. We use it from javelina to elk. It works great with a Nikon scope for those 500 yd. desert shots.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

I bought my 300 RUM this past January, mostly for elk. I reloaded 180 gr barnes triple shock x bullets and I get 3430 for velocity. As far as energy, I get more down range energy than the 338 Win Mag. I love this gun. I have not been able to take an elk with it, but have taken a sheep and two mulies with it. All over 300 yards. Sheep 300 yards, mulie 350 yards and mulie 540 yards. The last one was a very long shot, and would not have taken it with any other gun. All were one shot kills that dropped where they stood. I really want to see what it will do to an elk. My groups are less than 1 inch at 100 yards.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Oh my gosh, how are all you guys getting >3400fps with 180gr bullets. Out of all three of the bores I have shot thru, I either get pressure signs at 3300fps or accuracy goes down hill. I have tried Re25 (fastest velocity), retumbo, H1000, and Re22, and IMR4350.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Big country-My two 300 ultramags have 26" pac-nor barrels. One rifle produces 3375fps with 96gr of r-25 while the other produces 3395fps with 95gr of r-25.These readings were taken at 60 degrees so with a little warmer weather 3400fps would be easily reached.Neither gun shows any pressure signs with these loads and three shot groups average 1/2" with both rifles. My friends son uses 95gr of r-25 in his factory remington 700bdl ls and his velocity is just over 3300fps.The high quality barrel and tighter chamber of my custom rifles do seem to add a little velocity without sacrificing accuracy.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

That' s pretty fast. What kind of velocities are you getting with 150 grains? I shoot 150gr Barnes X bullets in my 300 Wby. The manual claims 3450 with my load but I' ve never chronographed them.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Maybe since my throat is much shorter than " factory" specs with my 300RUM Custom with Kreiger barrel I can' t reach these velocities. I reached these velocities with 96gr of Re25 also with Speer grandslams, but can' t really do it with Noslers or accubonds.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Not my writing, but that of Col. Jeff Copper:

You have heard, perhaps, of the new Remington 300 " Ultra Magnum." This uses the unbelted 404 Jeffrey case necked down to 30 caliber, to start the good old 180-grain Spitzer bullet at 3300f/s. (Wow!) Here we have an ideal example of an answer in search of a question. It has long been obvious that if you want more power than available in the 30-06 you do not want more velocity, you want more bullet mass. This should be obvious to anyone who really uses rifles on live targets, but apparently it is not. When you ask, " What is it for?" the answer is " It' s to sell, stupid! Why else do we make anything?"

bigcountry 10-28-2003 02:07 PM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Boy, its a good thing I don' t make up my mind based off the writings and livings of other people like this Col. I don' t even watch football or baseball or basketball on TV, because I just don' t like living thru other people even though I played all sports growing up. I like to go out live my life and find out things on my own. The masses that this Col writes too are in my opinion Sheep. He too seems to have something to sell it sounds like.

The good Col Jeff Copper should learn that velocity kills. His statement lacks alot of merit.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

He is the master of big bullets which also kill. Anything he has not learned in his first 94 years, he will most likely never learned. Don' t believe he needs to know much more than he does.:D I am proud to have been one of his sheep for many years of combat shooting. Long live the 1911!!!

Big bullets kill. Velocity kills. If you have both, you should be in pretty good shape:D

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

A .308" -180gr bullet will easily kill any north american game animal if it is of proper construction and driven at sufficient velocityThe 300 ultramag easily provides sufficient velocity..

neweboarhunter 10-28-2003 11:44 PM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Velocity will only take you so far. Heavier bullets driven at an adequate speed and of larger diameter will do two things 1. penetrate farther 2. create a larger diameter wound channel. IMHO I see no need for the whole R.U.M. lineup save the .375. LOL NBH.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

One needs only to look at the performance of the old 45-70 and other sharps calibers to see that although speed kills so do slow as hell heavy bullets like 350-500 grain. Many a head of large and dangerous game animals have fell to the old black powder cast bullet firearms of years gone by. There are a long line of folks on in both camps here. To an extent, everyone is correct. In the end though.ITS ALL SHOT PLACEMENT. 22 hornet or 700 express. A good hunter who can place his shots well has taken every game animal on earth with the 7x57 mauser and the 303 british and 30-06. As for the original question, I have no use for any of the big magnums. If I ever do it would be the 300 WSM.in the Browning A-bolt with the Boss comp. I would load it with Winchester Fail Safes.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

how is the kick on the 300 ultra mag compare with other calibers.? is it anything close to a 450marlin or a 250gr. 35 whelen?

BarnesX.308 10-29-2003 10:54 AM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Quilly, I have a 300 Weatherby and a 45-70. Not quite what your looking for but close. The 300 kicks more than the 45-70 with hot hand loads. It' s not so much more that you couldn' t handle it. If you can shoot the 450 Marlin with no trouble, the 300 RUM should be managable. Gun weight is the key here, too.

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Quilly, I owed a 300 wby and have shot several 300RUM, while the RUM might have a bit more punch, it is very close to the same recoil IMO. It is stiff but tolerable, for me it is not a tshirt gun or an option as I have a bummed shooting shoulder and had to sell my 300 wby b/c I was developing a flinch when at the range. So the inability to practice for me equals lower confidence and a poor choice. I would suggest shooting one if you can before buying, but like Scott said if you can handle a 450 you' ll be fine with RUM.

Personally I think if you have long shot opps and chase big game it is a good choice. The other must is handloading, buying factory ammo doesn' t really harness the benefits of the RUM like SJ pointed out. If deer is your mainstay then it is way to much and not nessecary IMHO. You must expect/be able to handle the boot a large gun will give you and if not don' t toy with the idea of going big!

BarnesX.308 10-29-2003 01:00 PM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

I don' t know about the RUM, but if I didn' t handload, my Weatherby would be out of the question due to price. 300 Wby premium loads are over $50 a box!!!

I have two 300 ultramags and have owned a 300wby.Recoil felt very similar but the ultra mag pushed a 180 gr bullet 125fps to 150fps faster than the weatherby

doubleA 10-29-2003 10:26 PM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Not having a 300 RUM I cant say for sure on the recoil but with case capacity I would put it in between my 30-378 WBY Improved and the 300 WBY. Believe it or not between the 30 calibers that I have below the 4th one ( 308 Norma Mag) from the right has the most felt recoil of them. This is due to the guns weight and fit. The 30-378 WBY IMP(far left) and the 300 WBY (2nd from left) are real ***** cats when it come to recoil in my rifles.

James
Like I said, " he definately has something to sale" himself. One thing he has learned in 94 years is " niche" selling. And he sounds very good at it. Like the rest of them, Jack O' connor, Elmer, Ackley, Forbes they all had a niche. And I refuse to be a sheep and follow them like a zombie. I will listen too them, but I will go out and make up my own mind. Some points they all had are valid, but in the end, all that matters is a dead animal on the ground. And I have not had a problem with that, so again, why do I need thier advise again????????

I love to shoot. I love working up the loads. I love seeing what one does to another. I have no problems with new offereings.

Always remember, your never too old to learn something.

Like you told me once Big Country its like having a 454 under the hood...I would buy one just by hearing replies on this board because it sounds like it has excellent accuracy as well as adequate power for just about anything that walks this earth.

bigcountry 10-30-2003 10:54 AM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Ok, you guys are going think I flip my lid. But if I didn' t have so much time invested in the 300rUM, I would stick with the 300WSM. Why? I got mine shooting very very good at long ranges, But its very finicky to powder and COL.

oldelkhunter 10-30-2003 11:10 AM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

No I don' t think you have flipped your lid...I found out the 300 wsm is really not a finnicky cartridge at all in fact it may be the most straight forward cartridge I have ever loaded for. If they could only taper that case more so it would feed better...

bigcountry 10-30-2003 12:13 PM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

I agree a little with that oldelkhunter. I like that new push feed CRF that winchester has. Might solve the issue. I am loading for a few friends with the 270WSM and 300WSM, and am having a hard time getting them to shoot bad. But they better start taking the time to work my press, or that freebie reloading is going to end pronto. Velocity spreads are very low in comparison to my 300RUM. H1000 works wonders in my RUM for spreads but Re25 really cooks but has spreads like 80fps.

oldelkhunter 10-30-2003 12:56 PM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Same problem with me loading stuff for other people taking up way too much time...told them all to buy their own equipment and leave me alone.

bigcountry 10-30-2003 01:21 PM

RE: OPINIONS ON THE REMINGTON 300 ULTRA MAG

Nothing ticks me off more when it takes me 3 hours to load 20 rounds for someone. Then go to the range with them, and you are shooting 3 rounds and letting your gun cool. Then your buddy is over there rapid firing the ammo like its some cheap ole army surplus, shooting the 20 rounds in an hour or less. Then looking at you saying " boy, I am definatly going to get you to load up some more of those" .
