Which would you choose and why,,,,,, MMossberg 500 or Smith and Wesson 1000?
|
Well the 500 is a pump action and the 1000 is a semi-auto. You're not really comparing apples to apples. Released in 1961, the 500 is a rock solid pump, available in 12 and 20 gauge with a real track record and available in different variations.
The S&W 1000 is made by Howa in Japan for S&W. If I recall it is 12 gauge only. It was dropped by S&W then picked up and marketed as...........the Mossberg 1000. The gas system does not like oil and oil there causes problems but they are fixable. A buddy has a Moss 1000. He likes it alot and shoots it well. What are you looking for? |
Mossberg 500 all day. I do like my mossberg 1000 but between the two the 500 is more reliable and is as far as i know still manufactured
|
I say the Mossberg 500 and its due to if parts are ever needed they will be way easier to find
that if your looking for a gun to go and shoot NOW if your on the collecting side of things, the S&W for sure there just isn';t as many out there but it is NOT and never will be a money gun falls more into the game of just being able to say you have one. LOL I have owned a few S&W shotguns over the yrs nothing special about them, other than some of the riot guns I had , kicked like a mule LOL finding extra barrels or adding choke 's will be way easier on the 500, as would finding better stocks or, about ANY part period the 500 is a long standing solid gun! |
Mossberg 500 is good, but I don't like how recoil is terrible with 3" loads and the degree to which the forearm rattles and twists. What is cool to me is that they do sell slug/bird combos.
http://www.basspro.com/Mossberg-500-...hart-container I don't know what you'll use it for, but if you're going after turkeys, I'd suggest a Remington 870 or a Winchester SXP, instead. Easier to get a 3.5 chamber, if you want it. |

I'd choose a Remington 870. Everybody has an 870. Everybody's dad has a beatup original 870 from back in the day. They are virtually everywhere. There are laws somewhere that state that every gun safe is required to have an 870 in it! |
As a kid my dad had the S&W and now as an adult with the Mossberg 500 I was thinking of listing mine to find one like dad had. My Mossberg mainly hangs out in the safe only to be shot once in a blue moon. Which is what would happen with the S&W.
Trying to remember specifics of a shotgun from over 30yrs ago is rough. I remember it was a S&W, 12g,, now through the interweb I assume it was a 1000. Except I remember the grip plate being black with gold logo. The ones I've seen are silver. Were there other models? |
