7mm Rem Mag, 28 Nosler or 7mm RUM? Which would you choose and why?

As an all around hunting rifle. Lone Peak action, Benchmark carbon barrel and McMillan lazzeroni or a Greybull stock...

You know I'm a classic cartridge guy = 7MM RM.

As a "all around hunting rifle" you may just need to resort to using factory loads on a out of state hunt one day !?!?

There is nothing wrong with that round, particularly if you reload !!!

7 MM STW, will do anything the 28 nosler or the 7 Rum will do with cheaper brass

What's your go to load?

my go to load is a 140 gr NBT, in front of 83 gr of H1000, lit off with a fed. 215, runs 3550 fps, sighted in 2.6" high at 100 makes it 19.2" low at 500 yards, at 400 hold on the hairline, 500 10" high

That's scooting along pretty good! It's already chambered up in a .284 Diablo but I don't have time anymore for fireforming and all that fun stuff :hit:

yeah Remington screwed the pooch pretty good on the STW, its an awesome cartridge, it was one of the few that would break 3500 fps with a mid weight bullet, it was legitimized in '96, was published at 3500 fps with a 140, in or around '98 Remington introduced the 7 RUM, they cut the STW back so it did not rival the rum but it is an equal, have chronied 160's at 3340 from my lilja barreled STW

I love it. The wind don't stand a chance with that kind of velocity. TOF can rule the day on medium range distances in the wind. I have a 6mm x 284 that shoots a little 87 grain vmax at 3440 fps. I have come to notice I don't hold near as much wind as others up to 600 yards in a lot of our steel matches. Accuracy above all but speed is a very exciting factor.

My little gun only has a 1 in 13" twist so that's why I'm shooting the 87gr. I've taken it out to 1225 yards with not much issues though. 100% target set up, have never used it on big game with the bullet configuration I'm using.

The 7MM Rem Mag is the US Secret Service Counter Sniper Rifle standard and has been so since the 70s. Their 4 man team set a National Record with them back in the 80s.

The downside is high velocity 7MMs are noted for fouling so you will need to have a copper removing solution to keep the copper build up down. You can buy it or make your own. http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm

I can recommend Ed's Red for general cleaning, light lube and bore protection and Improved Humpy's White for copper removal if you want to use your money to buy reloading supplies !!!!

From a reloading standpoint any of the specialty 7 mag family is going to be a pricey affair. 7MM Rem Mag will probably be the easiest to find if you are not reloading.

Your best accuracy will likely be obtained by reloading.

I would definitely choose the 28 Nosler. You can hand load a 175 grain ablr @3200 fps. Overall a great caliber
