Remington 700 SPS in 30-06
Brother thinking about this gun for deer mainly. Does anyone have experience with the rifle and what ammo generally does it like? Thanks

Proud owner of a Remington 700 SPS DM in .243win.
I use 75gr. Hornady V-max (predators) & .95gr. Hornady SST's (hoofed animals). 1,000 + rounds through it and still love it !!! |
Remington 700 SPS .308
I own a Remington 700 Special Purpose Synthetic .308 that I bought from a gun shop locally.
I am with Sheridan, I could not be more proud of my purchase. To be honest a .308 may be a little more than I need but I would be just as disappointed if it wasn't as much as I needed. As for the ammunition I again purchased it from an online ammunition store and my gun seemed to prefer the 150 grain .308 Hornady American White Tail as opposed to the 180 grain .308 Remington Express Core-Lokt. Best of luck to you in your gun search! |
redmag, I own a Remington SPS in 30-06. I use it for deer hunting. I shoot 165 grain Hornady BTSP in it. I reload it with 54.5 grains of IMR 4350. I like the synthetic stock and the matte finish as hunting in rain or snow doesn't cause problems that wood stocks can have. I recommend this rifle. I also have a 243 in SPS. its a varmit rifle.

Thanks for the info. I believe my brother is going to go with this gun. He has used since about 72 a 30-06 742 and he is starting to have problems with it.

Unless a guy just doesn't like Remington, there's not much to complain about with any 700 model, the SPS included. If a guy's looking for a budget friendly killing machine, it's a fantastic option. Once the barrel pressure points are removed to ensure free float, forend stiffened, and the action is bedded, then there's no reason to think it won't be as accurate as other 700 models that might run twice the price (as long as you run slow fire).
I've been very tempted to pick up a couple 700 SPS Stainless's lately for future projects, since the whole rifle isn't much more expensive than the bare action, and they're not ever going to get any cheaper. |
Thanks Nomercy, Doesn't sound like a buy and go hunting gun. His usage here in WV is almost always under 100yds.

Redmag, it is a buy and go gun. It'll kill deer at that range for the rest of his life, and his kids lives too.

Thanks Bo. Can't imagine selling a gun that can't hit a ribcage at 100 yds.

I used my SPS as a build action. The trigger was 5.8 lbs. But I did get the gun bought for under $400. The rifle was in a 243 win purchased for a youth and it had more precieved recoil than it should of had. Love the action though.

Any Rem 700 off of the shelf, barring some unique issue that made it past quality control, will kill deer at 100yrds with ease. Most of them leave the factory these days shooting better than 1-1.5MOA with factory loads. You might find a rifle that doesn't like a certain brand or bullet weight, but usually, they'll meet those marks. 1-1.5MOA will kill deer to 400-500yrds. In other words - if you're hunting deer 0-300yrds, a Rem 700 SPS is a buy and go hunting gun. |
