Need your opinions on the .280
 

Let' s have it. I' ve been debating about buying a 280 for some time now. Also, what are some good bullets for this cal. for deer sized game?

i owned a 280rem in a rem 7600. fine caliber and a great shooter.
i would say 139gr. up to 160gr. would be fien for deer. but each gun will shoot differantly

My dad' s got a .280 that gets plenty of use. He' s taken it on his annual Texas hunt for about four years, four deer every year, and across the 16 deer, if you added it all up, they ran about 15 yards after the shot. The gun just kills deer flat-out dead. It' s almost exactly the .270, with a lot less availability. If you can deal with shopping around for ammo, great gun.

Love my .280!
IMO, one of the best all around caliber' s available! I use Hornady 139gr spire point boattails. Flat out awesome. :D

Good caliber, the only knock is unless you reload or know somebody who does ammo is not the easiest to find and selection when you do is limited. If your going to buy factory ammo I would suggest going to a 7 rem mag, ammo is similar priced but more readily available...plus it has a bit more umf and reach.

I think the .280 is a great a round,I recomend it a lot to women hunters and father/kidds first timers for elk who don' t wan' t a magnum or are recoil shy.It is a good step between the 30-06 and 270,if you hand load it has great potetial.

The .280 is a great round. Plenty of gun for all of North Americas hooved game. For whitetails any 140 grain bullet will do fine. For larger animals like elk moose and black bear look to a premium bullet in 150 or 160 grain.

The .280 is about as good as it gets for North American hooved game. For deer, the various 139-145gr premium bullets work great. For elk, the 160gr is perfect. The 150gr bullets make outstanding mixed-bag fodder.

I have to defer to Otis on this one...he said it first...the .280 Rem is probably a better all-around cartridge than the .30-06.

The .280 Remington is a very good round though not as popular as either the .270 or the .30-06. For 99% of the hunting done in the lower 48.....there is little difference between the above three mentioned rounds! Each of the three might be slightly better than the other in a specific situation but not enough difference between them to really matter. (Other than for personal preference!)

By picking specific weights of bullets a case can be made that one is better than the other two....but by changing bullet weights and shapes, (and intended uses), you can show that for ANY OF THE THREE!

All three of the above are truly useful cartridges....and essentially overlap in the majority of their usage!
