270/338

Kicking around an idea...a 338 RUM necked down to 270 and then a double radius shoulder, weatherby style. My buddy just got a 270/26 Nosler reamer built, I might get this reamer done and send it to him to compare...

A potential screamer to be sure. U could probably kill a WT from Kookyfornia to Texas with minimal holdover. LOL!

Jeepkid - always pushing the envelope !!!

Go get'em big guy...........................

jeepkid 10-23-2014 05:24 AM

Well he's going to send his reamer back and get a double radius shoulder reamer instead. Should be sweet, hopefully it'll be done for our Nebraska trip next month.

Interesting concept. You are going to need a long pipe on this wildcat to be able to utilize that big case. Good luck with your endeavor.

Or or...a 300 WBY or 378 WBY necked down...the shoulder is already done so no fireforming needed...

My shoulder hurts just thinking about it. LOL

My first thought when I read this was "that would be a screamer" - just like mentioned above. I chuckled when I read that.

Jeep,

I have a 270 win getting built right now with a 29" barrel. The cool part is Matrix bullets have come out with a 270 bullet in 165 gr G1 .650 BC and 175gr G1 .680 BC. I wish they had a G7 listing but they don't. I have some 165gr Matrix bullets and they ran out of a 26" barrel at 2905fps with no pressure signs and a few grains of powder to spare. the 29" plus barrel will take it over 3000fps with the 165gr bullets. At 900 yards the 270 165gr bullet catches up to my 300 WM 165gr G1 .520 bullet in ft.lbs flying 3260. Nosler makes a 150 gr 270 bullet that breaks G1 .600 I may go that route and pump up the fps. Sorry for all the G1 numbers but its easier to compare. http://www.matrixballistics.com/.277...e-bullets.html

The reason I picked the 270 win in a long barrel was it has enough to do what I want out to a mile. The wind drift of the .277 in a 165gr is going to be a sweety. Compare them to other calibers and it takes a lot more weight to equal the BC.

Anyway I think the .277 is about to take a whole new turn into long range and it's about time. I'm days away from having it done and it's taken almost half a year so I'm excited.

My opinion about a 270 wildcat in a large case capacity would be go with the 7 STW case or 300 WM case. Weatherby's would have a lot of pressure in a long barrel and you would have more chance of maximizing the potential of powder and fps out of the prior two cases. If you could take the 175gr .277 to above 3200 fps it would be just amazing. That's pushing the extreme but that's why we play.

If you want to wait in a few weeks I'll have some numbers out of the regular 270 win you can compare and see if larger case or maybe even a 270 weatherby or 270 wsm would be enough gain for what you want.

Those Matrix bullets are nice, I have some 165's right now. I also did a 270 WSM already, once I get the feeding issues straightened out I'll start getting her tuned in. I'm also going to rebarrel my 6.5/284 with a MRI barrel and chamber it in a regular 270 Win.

We are thinking bigger now, and with the 150gr ABLR it could be really sweet at 3500+ :) :)

A 300 Weatherby case would be the way to go. Friend who has left this realm now made one in 6.5 x 300 Wby. Fast and accurate.
