My new deer popper!!!

5 Attachment(s)
This is my new Deer Rifle. Glenfield Model 30, 30-30.

Bought it slightly used for $400. All I know is its got the same Machinisms as a Marlin 336 & a Birch stock.

What do yall think? Any recomendations? Any extra Info youve got would be great!

Im gonna get it scoped tomorrow, I'll post more pics then.

Thanks!

Should shopped around buds gun shop has a new marlin 336w for $408 if you pay cash plus the price your dealer urges to transfer. But that rifle looks in good shape. Or for $444 you can get the combo with a scope.

Looks good to me. What are you going to scope it with. I wouldn't think much more than a straight 4X would be necessary.

buckman11 10-02-2014 08:44 AM

Yea I kinda thought that as well, I may just go with 3-9 x 40.

Used Glenfield/Marlin vs. a new production Remlin? No contest, better value in the $400 Glenfield than the $400 or $440 Remlin.

What pill you looking at feeding it?

I'd look at a 3-9x40 or so. Nothing wrong with a fixed 4x, but if it ever comes off and needs to find a new home, a 3-9x would be more versatile than the fixie...

Yea thats kinda what I thought with the scope. Im usin 160 Grain LeverEvolution.

It disgusts me what Remington has done. Marlin was always dependable, But I wont buy a Remlin. Its really upsetting. Im just glad I could get a good, solid, Pre-Remlin Rifle!

Congrats, love the old Marlins. Consider buying a scope that has a 32mm objective instead of the 40mm, lever action rifles don't have a raised comb and anything over 32mm will have you lifting your face off the stock to see through the scope. Also stick with low rings to keep the scope as close to the barrel as possible. I've got 3 of these rifles; one has a Bushnell Elite 2-7x32mm, one has a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x32mm, and the other has a Nikon P223 3x32mm fixed power scope. All three of my scopes can see deer beyond 200 yards during legal shooting hours. Anything larger just adds unnecessary weight and bulk to a rifle that is meant to be a quick handling carbine. If I had to go buy a new scope today, I'd buy another Bushnell Banner 1.5-4.5x32mm. This scope is simply the best value out there, the lens' are clear and bright and there's more than enough magnification to hit a deer as far out as the 30-30 can reach. Don't be surprised if your gun doesn't like the 160 grain LE ammunition, a lot of the older guns just shoot better with the 170 grain flat or round nose bullets. Each one of my Marlins has their preference, but they all shoot Federal blue box 170's really well.

Woods gun from yesteryear.....................

For me - no scope, iron sights.

.30-30 classic cartridge !

"Beware of the man with one gun,,,,,,,,,"

BTW - I like the "scare" on the bluing near the top right side of the receiver.

Character !!!

Don't over look a peep sight either. Work great on older lever guns, lend themselves to quick handling in tight brush spots.

I also second the Bushnell Banner dusk to dawn 1.5 x7 x32 scope. I have one on my 870 slugger.

I agree with Alleyooper on the Peep sight too.

Only problem you have to watch out for with the Glenfield/Marlin's is that the SN is often on the tang where many peep sights would mount, so you have to have a smith relocate the SN elsewhere on the rifle before you D&T the tang (or buy a stamp set and do it yourself - cheaper to have a smith do it than the price of a good stamp set though).

Receiver mounted sights don't have that problem, but you still gotta D&T the receiver, so migrating and touching up bluing for the SN really isn't THAT much of a problem.

alleyyooper 10-04-2014 02:44 AM

I do not get the serial number problem with a tang mount peep sight like the Lyman # 2 on my model 94?

Afraid of a stolen gun not having the serial number exposed? Pawn Shops never worry about the serial number till they have to do the selling paper work.

My friend found his stolen guns at a pawn shop. He did have the serial number list when he got the cops to go back but with the removal of the butt plats there was his name drivers license number and address on a plastic tape.

All of my levers bear no scopes. I did throw some peeps on my 1895 rifle. Still have stock sights on the 1895GS though. I used to sport a scope on my 336cs, but finally got wise and yanked it. Lever guns handle best naked IMO

No... More concerned with the Federal Offense of drilling and tapping holes THROUGH digits of the SN.

Technically, the SN must be overtly located, so covering it up DOES constitute a federal offense as well, but that's a separate matter.

Not ALL Marlin's have the SN down the tang, hence my original post said that the SN is OFTEN located on the tang (about half of mine are, half aren't).

To my knowledge, none of the Remlins have tang stamped SN's, but I only own 2 of them so I can't confirm all of them have the left hand side stamp.

Here's a pic I stole off of the internet, clearly shows a SN down the back of the tang of a Marlin 1894.

If you want to go the peep route you can check with Williams sight company. They have a peep that goes right on the receiver. I have them on my 2 Win 94s and on my Marlin 1895 Guide Gun.

Jenks 10-05-2014 06:32 AM

I have a Lyman 66A on my Winc. '94, it had holes drilled and tapped for it, or a similar sight at the factory. Your 336 may have those holes too. Have a gunsmith or someone that knows look at it. I much prefer a receiver sight to a scope on a lever 30-30. Nice gun!! The older generation of guns is disappearing, sorry to see them go.

I have one of those 1.5-4.5 Bushnell Banner scopes on a 3006. They are very good scopes for the money. Obviously, I am not going to use the gun for prairie dogs but 4.5 power is plenty for the shots at deer that I will take.

buckman11 10-06-2014 06:39 AM

People talk about the Birch stock like its a bad thing but I like it more than Walnut. I dropped it off at the gun shop last week to get it scoped and laser bore sighted, I'm gonna pick it up this afternoon, I'll post more pics then.

UncleNorby 10-08-2014 10:46 AM

I wish I'd heard of this before you bought that gun. I have bad news for you. I read on the internet that a 30/30 will no longer kill deer. On the bright side, I'll give you 50 bucks for it.

Hahaha yeaaaaaaa.

WV Hunter 10-08-2014 05:47 PM

My first gun was a 30A. Nice rifle, got my first deer with it. :D Today she just sits in the safe. I'd go with a 2-7 or 3-9 scope, if you decide to scope it. My buddy has a peep on his '94 and it works well too.

I got it back this mornin! Went ahead and mounted it with the 3-9 x 40 Tasco World Class Scope. I know its not the best but its all I could afford. It looks pretty good and im very impressed with the quality of the scope for the price. Here are some pics, let me know what you think.

cammogunner 10-14-2014 07:35 AM

nice a 3-9x40 will be fine i love tasco scopes for the most part they are great for the price.

redgreen 10-14-2014 09:36 AM

Congrats. I had a world class on a 300 mag many years ago. Never gave me any trouble, and when I took an unscheduled trip into a creek bottom and broke my elbow it didn't change of impact. It should serve you well.

cv540 12-13-2014 08:54 AM

scope and ammo

Scope:
Congrats on rifle and scope. Tasco's are great and should serve you well.

I have an older Stevens bolt action .30-30 that has a Williams peep sight on it. This is my "still hunting in falling snow" rifle. It is really nice to not have to worry about keeping the snow off the lenses of a scope, and shots will typically be fairly close, and sometimes fast.

The Leverrevolution 160 grains Hornady's are extremely accurate out of the above rifle, and likely will work well in your rifle.

Stevens 320

Areas i hunt are thick. So i bought a stevens 18.5" 320 pump. Tried many types of ammo to pattern it. It groups very well out to 50 yards with super x 3" buckshot...00. Ive put 500+ rounds threw it making sure i can hit what im shooting. This will be better then my sawed off 22" single shot 4 sure. If hunting open areas i use my .243.
