The .270 Win is one of the great big-game hunting cartridges of all time. For deer at all reasonable ranges, it is nearly perfect. Yes, it does shine a little brighter when the real estate is wide open, but any deer hit fairly with it at 40 yards is going home to your family' s freezer.

If the .270 Win is your choice, you' ve made a good one.

I agree with everyone talking about a lightning quick lever gun here. 45/70, .450 Marlin, .444 Marlin fill the bill quite nicely. Good hunting brothers!

Being LH I started out with pump action rifles and we hunt both heavy cover and open areas. I used a 308, 3006 and 270 pump not a dimes worth of difference in deer performance in bush and short distance shots. I never have believed in bush beaters and many studies have proven their is no such thing. It just boils down to personal preference and what each individual likes to use that makes the difference. I wouldn' t have a problem with a 270 for your applications, in fact many other sated would be equally up to the task.

If it werent for Jack O' Connor, the 270 would be a historical note like the 30-40. Everyone thought it was his favorite, when in actuality he preferred the 7mmMauser with 140 bullets for sheep hunting (the gun could be built lighter and smaller than a long action 270). Jack probably would' ve RAVED and LOVED the 7-08 had it had the bullets and powder choices we have today. I likewise believe that he would' ve preferred the 280 over the 270 had it been then what it is today.

I dont know that he would ever have favored mags for deersized game, but if so he would' ve LOVED the 7mag as well. I think he mentioned the 7 Page Super Pauper once (father and basic equivalent to the 7mag), but you gotta remember that back in those days there werent the slow powders and tough bullets we have today that really make mags shine.

A 270 is a FINE deer gun and I would STRONGLY recommend it over something like the mythical " brush guns" that are bantered about. The only use I have for a 30-30 anymore is to decorate the mantel with. If you believe their " theories" you could always put 150 round noses in the 270 and " wade into" the brush after Mr. Buck. If you buy a 30-30, you are gonna need another gun when you go anywhere else or hunt something besides deer. At least with a 270 you be as limited (tho despite manys use for it, I NEVER recommend a 270 for elk or larger).

OK, I' ve read your comments and here' s my two cents:

I fall into the category of owning both a .270 bolt and a .450 Marlin Lever gun. The Marlin I use strictly for short range hunting from ground blinds. It' s short (18.5 in barrel) powerful, easy to manuever for a quick shot, easy to get on target quickly. It is not a brush buster and neither is any other rifle. I only use it when I' m guaranteed not to have a shot over 100 yards. I' ve put a 1x Reddot on it for quick target acquisition and it' s perfect for it' s intended use.

Prior to having the luxury of adding the Marlin .450 to my hunting choice, all I had was a .270. From 1 yards to 300 yards(my limit), it will perform flawlessly in thick brush or open country. If your just going to have one choice for all hunting possibilities, a .270 wood be a fine choice. Just put a scope on it that goes down to 1.5x or 2x and your set. Even a 3-9x with wide view would work. That' s what I have.

Thanks Frizzellr, I' ll have to study up on those test results. I was always under the assumption that the smaller bullets deflect more then the heavier. I learn something new everyday.

The 270. is a great deer buster, my uncle used one till he died and shot many deer with it. Many of the mentioned cal. will work great, but if your in fairly thick brush I' d stay away from the boltguns and consider a lever or a pump[Ive been using a 30.06 pump for over 20yr. and won' t trade it for anything, great for long range and super fast second shot if you need it].The nice thing about pumps,levers and semi' s is that the new round is loading but the rifle never leaves the shoulder.But that' s just my humble opinion.

With a good shooter using a bolt action the gun never leaves the shoulder either.From my own observations,the people that are concerned about a fast second shot are usually the ones that are more likely to mess up the first shot.

I acquired a Ruger .270 a couple years ago. I took it to Wyoming ( see antelope pics in Big game forum) on its first hunt on Oct 1, killed a nice antelope with it. You bet I like the .270 win. Easy accuracy and recoil.:D:)[8D]

Excellent observation stubblejumper. I noticed the same thing in my neck of the woods.
