Remington 870 vs 887

My son will be graduating from high school in May and I would like to buy him a good pump shotgun. The shotgun will be used as an all around scatter gun, no slugs. Intended game will be everything from doves to rabbits to turkeys. I've owned an 870 for years with zero issues so thats where I started my search. All of my local shops seem to have 887s but very few 870s. What are the main differences other than the ugly lines on the 887?

The 887 has a plastic coating on it. I looked at one at bass pro the action feels like it has sand in it its so rough. Which I guess it'd break in over time but Ididn't really like the looks of the shotgun just my 2 cents though. I own 2 870's an old wingmaster 12 ga. and a 870 express super magnum never had a minutes worth of trouble with either.

The 887 has received scathing reviews everywhere. Randy Wakeman, who IS a shotgun expert cannot believe Remington let this model leave the factory. Google Randy Wakeman Outdoors. I'm sure he has his review there. It is the worst new pump out there. If you are looking for a Remington pump, especially as a gift for an important milestone, a Wingmaster is THE choice. A quality top of the line 870 that will last several lifetimes.

My advice .... you intent on Remington? I is the "Wingmaster" hands down ... the "Express" will set you back less but I love the classic look and feel of the Wingmaster. I have no clue how many rounds have been through mine. It ha to be in the range of 10,000. It has performed, and still does, flawlessly.

get the 870, it's been proven time and time again over many decades plus if/when need be parts and different barrels are easily found
