Advise on shotgun slugs.

Well I'm considering joinin a huntin club in south Alabama next season. Only issue for me is its shotgun with slugs only. I've killed several deer with 00 buck but never used slugs before. About how much does a rifled slug barrel cost for a Rem. 870 express super mag? Or should I just try rifled slugs? Any help greatly appreciated.

If your shooting is going to be 50 yd. or less, you could try your regular barrel with an improved cylinder tube in it. Most shotguns with that setup will shoot accurately enough at that range to get the job done. As far as slugs, I've had good results out to 100 yds. using Brennecke slugs in my smooth bore barrel.

I use winchester super x rifled slugs and they do great in my gun.

I would guess you can get a rifled barrel for under 250. Haven't priced them so hard to say. I would recommend the barrel with integral cantilevered scope mount, if you plan to scope the gun. If not, the version with iron sights will work fine.

As noted above, you may be able to get acceptable accuracy with rifled slugs in your current barrel, particularly if you don't plan to shoot that far. Another option is to install a rifled choke tube, and some sort of sights on your current gun. Sights are made that will attach to the vent rib on the barrel (if you have one on your barrel). These have been known to perform well with sabot slugs in the lower velocity ranges, say under 1700 fps.

Obvioulsy, using rifled slugs in your current setup is the cheapest option, if you can get them to shoot well enough. They'll do a number on the deer too.

+1 on the integral cantilevered scope mount.

Mossberg makes an aftermarket slug barrel for the 870, which should save you a little money (a friend has one and I have not heard him complain about it).

A year or so ago, I bought the scoped rifled barrel for my Rem 870 (that Bbj270 posted) from Cabela's. It's full rifled, has a double row of small ports on the upper front of each side of the barrel to reduce muzzle jump, and has a cantilever scope mount with a 3-9x Simmons scope. It looks like it should work ok.

I haven't shot it yet as most of my hunting is with CF rifles, but we do have a few special weapons restricted areas near heavily populated areas, and I occasionally hunt other states with shotgun/ML hunting areas.

I'm also looking for advise on what slugs to shoot in it.

For the rifled/cantilever barrel your looking at a price of $250/$300, cheaper for used on Ebay. Use sabot slugs
