Default suggestions on new pistol

I will be buying my first pistol soon. I am pretty set on a .45 ACP. So far i really like the Smith & Wesson M&P's and the Springfield XD's. It will be used for open carry, home protection and target plinking. I know the Glocks are popular but never been a big fan of them. The only reason i would buy a Glock would be to get a 10mm which is my second choice in caliber. Open to other suggestions as to makes and models. Not looking for a compact model want something with full sized grip and at least 4-4.5 inch barrel. What do you guys shoot and what would you suggest.

What do you guys shoot...
A Springfield "GI" model for fun and walking around the desert.
A Kimber Tactical Ultra when carrying. It has a full sized grip so it is easy to hold but a shorter barrel so it is easy to carry. Tritium sights so you can see them at night, in a dark house, etc.

Have a look at the Kimbers. Yes they are pricey but IMHO well worth it.

Oh i would love a Kimber i have drooled over them for years. They are just a little too much for my budget unfortunately. My second choice if i had the money would be a HK USP

There are only two 45 acp's, The Sig Sauer 220 or 227. Everything else is substandard.

Just got the Ruger 1911. I like it. For the price I think it is an exceptional gun.

I have two smith & wesson M&Ps both in 40 S&W. One is the compact and the other a full size. They are reliable and accurate handguns and feel good in my hand. I also have a 1911. But going by what you want it for I would say go with the M&P 45. You will have all the pistol you need with the addition of 3 extra rounds in the mag as opposed to the 1911.

I always carry a S&W 642 in my front right pocket and 2 reloads in the left. I have never felt as if I needed more gun than my 642. The great thing is with the 642 is I don't have to worry about violating gun laws in regards to capacity when I travel to other states.

First pistol or first hand gun ?

First pistol = 9MM

First handgun = 357 (38 special)

Young/novice & first handgun = .22LR

Just one man's opinion !
