Default Any opinions on Rem 770?

I have no direct knowledge at all of the 770, but maybe someone that actually owns one will share.

I don't own one but have a friend that does. His is plenty accurate for whitetails and he regularly kills em. After handling it, I'd opt for a Ruger American or Savage Axis at this price point.

I won one about 5 years ago at gun bash, 300 win camo stock stainless barrel. Had but 3 years never fired it, gave intro my cousin that wanted a deer rifle. It's distantly not a rem 700. It's ok for the person that wants to deer hunt one or two days a year. But I would not buy one you can spend about $100 more at Wal-Mart and get a proven rem 700 adl. My cousin said it shot ok.

Also the triger on the 770 can nit be adjusted with out a lot of work by a qualified gun Smith and that will cost a good penny. I would go for it over the axis.

Big Uncle---You have sure reacted swiftly to my comment on the other thread, LOL! Other than cheap plastic parts, a bolt that many have the handle break off at any time, a poor, sloppy action, and still having a Walker trigger in it that has resulted in numerous wrongful death lawsuits in the 700 that was finally changed in the higher priced models a few years ago, what else would you like to know about the 770? For a once or twice a year user, as the other member mentioned that is careful handling and using it there will probably be no problems because they are pretty accurate. I would move up for a little more money and buy a decent rifle that I did't have to worry about and that has a lot better reviews though. See, I got through that whole analysis without once saying it was a POS, LOL! PS: This was from an "in hand" in the store handling and comments and reviews I've read all over the net. It sounds like the previous comments from members back that up so far.

The trigger is tottaly different then any of the triggers ever in a rem 700. I still would use it over any savage there is. It is a lot better then the older 710 that was junk. I think it will soon be phased out with the newer 783 that is out.

So it would not be the first choice for shooting running elk in the head at 500 to 600 yards if it was chambered in .223?

OK, back to the drawing board.

Maybe a nice SKS with a big Nightforce 8x32?

***They may have changed the triggers out in the last couple years, but as far as I know the first ones produced that I looked at had the Walker in them. As far as I'm concerned, Savage puts out an excellent product for the money. I don't have anything but higher end rilfes in my safes, but wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I was in the market for anything else in the lower to middle prices.
