Model 70
Took my wife's model 70 out to check the scope on it before the Christmas hunt starts and had a problem. It wouldn't extract the empty shell. Hers is a newer one with the control round feed. The extractor claw moves back and forth freely. I should have paid more attention to how it worked, then maybe I would have a better idea of how the mechanism operated. I was wondering if this could be a home fix or something I will have to send in?

Hard to say based on the limited info.
Are you saying the extractor isn't pulling the case out of the chamber? Is it engaging the cartridge rim properly during feeding? What have you done with this rifle since the last time it was working right? Had the bolt out? Taken the bolt apart? Etc. Is there crud built up under the extractor keeping it from grabbing the case firmly? And so on .......... |
The extractor maybe broke then you need a gunsmith. Did it do this multiple times or this once. I see you have rugers and remingtons, you should have stuck to what's good. I personally don't like winchesterwinchester, got only one haven't used it in 14 years. Like bull said may nit be feeding the cartridge rim right.

I'm not really sure how it operates. Is the claw supposed to slide back and forth freely?

It sounds like your extractor may be bent. Look at it and see if it is bowed a bit in the middle (toward the bolt).
Yes, the extractor should rotate freely around the bolt. |
Nothing is bent or broken as far as I can tell.

I have seen extractors that have been sprung by a slight bend so that they would still fit into the action but moved outwards slightly when the bolt was opened.
A good smith could tell you in a minute or so if it is sprung. |
I see that you have a few M77 rifles. The extractor works the same.

Thanks fellers
