When I used them in my 243 shot deer right behind shoulders it zipped right through them with out expanding like a fmj. Rang was about 50-75 yards. Deer a Ted like they where not hit. Shot probably 4 deer with them all acted same way. Know people that used them on elk and moose and they work like that should. Herd others use them on deer and they said same thing did not expand. I like the old solid based bullets from nosler.

IMO you don't need a partition to kill a deer. But I've never heard of them not expanding like there suppose too. I tried the Federal 100g partitions in my 243 but wasn't happy with the accuracy so I never hunted with them.

The entrance hole and exit where the same size. The reload I had shot excellent from my rifle. The old solid base and the ballistic tips work well. The other people I know that had problems with partition bullets with deer where using a 25/06, 270, and a 7mm remington. My canada cousin that used the 7mm uses partitions on elk every seas oo n with great luck.

According to noslers website the partition is designed to work at 1800fps and above. I'd assume with 243 velocities at 75yds. you'd have to somewhere in the 2700ish range. Cant understand why it didn't expand properly

I used 100 gr. Noslers in my 6MM Rem. this season. It was my first time using reloads and the best grouping loads were in the .243 velocity range, 2 250+ lb. hogs and 2 deer did not have anything negative to say about how the 100 gr. Noslers worked!

Can't remember off top of my head but had the load pretty hot was the best groups I got out of the rifle. Did you use partitions jagmagman. The old solid base did a lot better job. In my 6mm I use hornady sst.

DJfan, I notice the 6 super bowl trophies in your post. are you near Pgh? 100 grain Remington core locks are good as well as hornady 100 grains too. you can use a lighter bullet for pronghorns if you choose to. for elk they make 120 grain bullets for the 243. just something to think about. good luck to your son.

I think as long as you are using a quality bullet designed for medium game (not varmint stuff) in 90+ gr. you should be OK. Ther are tons of very good factory stuff out there. The best grouping one wpuld be my choice.
My personal favorite bullets out of the 243 Win. for deer are either the Nosler Partition or Sierra Game King in 100 gr. Both do a great job on deer sized game. |
Thanks all!
