.260 or 7mm-08 for deer?
 

I'm planning to buy another rifle and it will be specifically used for whitetail deer in mixed hardwood forests. I am nearly sold on the Remington Model 700 Mtn Rifle in a .260, or 7mm-08. Has anyone had any good or bad experience with the .260? My top whitetail choice is a .308 but this rig is not offered in the .308. I realize that the .260 and 7mm-08 are necked down .308's but I'm not sure that the .260 would do the job should a direct hit be made to the shoulder.

Both would make an excellent deer cartridge. Ballisticly there isn't enough difference between the two to notice in hunting situations. I have a preference for the 7mm-08 because there's more bullet selection in factory ammo than the .260. But like I said. It's just personal preference. My daughter shoots the Remington 700 mtn. rifle in 7mm-08. It's a sweet shooting gun.

Both are great calibers. Both have mild recoil, similar ballistics and both are a whitetails nightmare.

I'd opt for the 7mm-08...for the same reason Borch said: Bullet selection.

If you are hunting mixed hardwoods, you may want to look into a 30-30. They are excellent whitetail rifles out to 200 yds. and really deliver a lot of energy on target. Ammo is available everywhere and very cheap.

My choice of the two would be the 7mm-08.

the 7mm. it is just like a .30-06 and that is what i shoot. it (i think) is the perfect deer gun. good for close and excelent for long. also can be used on biger game like elk or moose

I have a 30/30 and use a .338 for larger game. This gun will only see whitetails. I made the mistake of selling a .308! Maybe I should go with a Rem. Model 7 S/S in .308? You're all right about bullet selections. The .260 is a bit harder to find. PLUS I don't reload so off the shelf ammo is a must. .308 ammo is everywhere.

I don't own either of the calibers you are interested in, but I am just plain in love with both of them. I am a huge proponent of the 6.5 x 55 and 6.5 x 54 and 7 x 57. All of the aforementioned cartridges are of mild recoil and are proven SWEET whitetail rounds. They are by no means high velocity screamers, but that's the beauty of these rounds,....they get the job done without all the fuss and fury,.............low recoil, highly effective.
I WILL buy a .260 someday....(not in a hurry cause I'm still finishing the 'sporterizing' of a couple fine 6.5 x 55's)
and I WILL buy a 7mm/08 someday (but need to finish the complete ‘sporterization’ of my Steyr 1903 Mannlicher Schoenner rebarrelled to 7 X 57 and still in mostly Military configuration). I can't see how you could go wrong with either.....
I'd recommend the 7mm/08 though....for the very same reason that Borch, Pro-line and Quilly mentioned........factory bullet weight selection.
If you handload, however, then you should pick whichever caliber sets your heart on fire.......(plenty of after-market bullets available for both) cause the difference between the two, when the cases are stoked effectively, won't amount to a pinch of coonsh*t.
You have picked a great platform for a factory whitetail rifle,...... and your choice of the 2 calibers mentioned is super....there are at least 6 or 7 others that will do the job as well ( the .308 being among them),...but I have a love affair going with the .264 and .284 calibers.

You won't go wrong with either one,I have 260 in RugerMK11,w/22" barrel,and 7/08 in Rem,24" barrel.Either one is a 300 yd gun.Shot a spike in the throat at 110 yds,this past year,with the 260.I just went to the range today and used my new chroney,and the 7/08.Using a 130 speer BT,and IMR 4064,I got a range of 2861 to 3125 if I was doing it right.This was the first time using one.
