hornet?

what exactly is a hornet round. I have a .22 and a buddy of mine has a .17 and I always see and hear "hornet" but I don't understand it.

It's a .22 caliber centerfire cartridge developed in the 1930's.

And the .17 Hornet is a more recent incarnation, necking down the old 22 Hornet to a 17 cal bullet, since that's the rage these days.
