T/C venture
I just won a Venture in a 338 win mag. How should I expect this rifle to group? Has anybody ever had any problems with them. I already been sent back to the recall notice on it. Hopefully this winter I will start working on a load for it.

I would bed the action & the stock.
Have a basic trigger job done on it & have the barrel hand lapped. Buy the best glass you can afford (Lifetime Warranty a must) and mount the scope with DNZ rings. http://www.dnzproducts.com/game-reaper-mounts |
I would sell it or trade for something else unless you plan on shooting elephants from 1.5 miles away. Your looking at 60-70$ a box of rounds

It is no more expensive than my 300RUM. Reloading helps keep that cost down a bit. Only animal it probably will kill is coyotes, groundhogs and prarie dogs.

Shoot whatever makes you happy, but the 338 Win mag is not exactly the typical varmint gun.

338
the 338 is a great cartridge! Especially if you handload.
It is basically a necked up 300 win mag or necked down and shortened .375 H&H You can get a 185 gr. bullet going pretty good with them. I shoot a 340 weatherby it is the same just a bit faster. 210 gr. Bullets work great on elk. I current load 225 accubonds for Elk I would load 250 gr Partitions for big bears. Very usable caliber from coyotes to big bears. let me know if you want to unload it. |
Steve
I doubt I will ever use that gun to hunt big game. I usually use a muzzleloader but I do like shooting different calibers and reloading for them. |
Rad,
Not exactly a target gun......unless they are rhinos ??? |
True but it only cost me 10 dollars for the ticket and I don't own a 338 win mag yet. I am not one to sell guns. My rifles get about 6 shots a year when I zero them and cleaned 4 times each year.
