338 wm
i am sure some of you remember my issues with my new remington 700 338 wm. i fought it, sent it back, took it to a remington repair station and could not get decent groups. several times i heard it could or must be the shooter which i believed myself. i finally gave up and traded it for a savage bear hunter in 338 wm. the groups are amazingly better. last time out i shot 2 groups less than 1" @ 100 yds with two different factory ammo. a third group was not so good so i have illiminated that one from my sellection. needless to say i am elated with the dramatic improvement and look forward to wacking a big bull @ what ever distance i am comfortable with. makes me a little nervous about buying another remington even though i have 3 in smaller calibers that shoot great.

You did not even bed the 700. Usually hard recoiling 700 actions need to be bedded to shoot well (where have I heard that before?).
Glad you are happy with the Savage. Good hunting. |
i considered bedding but i also felt i needed to install a muzzle break. the cost of those two would have exceeded the trade difference so i went for the new gun and i am not at all disappointed. i am not saying bedding would not have worked on the 700 but i was getting frustrated with the results i was getting and just felt it was time to switch. the savage is a great gun that looks and shoots REAL good.

I am curious, did you do anything to the Savage, other than a scope? Savage is a highly underrated product. I bought one NIB,in 7MM at an auction, and after scoping and a couple trips to the range sold it to another hunter for 2x my purchase price. He has since shot everything from whitetail to antelopes,to trophy elk. Says it's one of his keepers.

scoped it, cleaned it and started shooting. i shot break in rounds with it just like my remington. both guns were handled identically with a MUCH better results from the savage. i am sold. i have been a remington guy all my life and i doubt that i will give up on them but on this particular gun and caliber the savage is heads and shoulders above the remington.
