.223 question
 

this might sound like a stupid question and im pretty sure i know the answer... recently there was changes in regulations for hunting coyote/fox in my state. this is what the rule book says now... you can hunt coyote/fox with a centerfire rifle from .17 to maximum of .25 caliber and maximum of 80 grains. so the question is can i use my .223 if i buy bullets that are 80 grains or less? I have a smith and wesson mp15 that i have alot of work and extras put into it and would like to finally use it for hunting instead of just at the range. In Jersey you cant hunt with a rifle unless its muzzleloader or certain calibers for certain small game seasons. so this would be awesome if i can use my .223

i could use a .22 , a .223 remington, a .22-250, a .244 winchester or .25 winchester. I believe. sucks they cut if off at .25 caus my grandfather has a .25-06 id like to try on coyote or fox. but im just clarifying the caliber size and rule they set just caus. i gotta argue with guys in my club about it saying you cant use the .223 but im pretty sure the way they explain it you can. and im pretty knowledgeable with my artillery ha ha.

You can use it! You can use a 243, and a 25-06 is a 25 caliber as is a 257 roberts or 257 Weatherby.. Your .223 is a 22 cal even though it is .224. Hope this helps. Just make sure your bullets are the right grain or weight.

Centerfire calibers from .17 to .25 and bullets less than 80 grains seems pretty clear. Your .223 should be fine.

Where are you seeing heavier than 80gr bullets for a .223??????????????????????

i havent seen any .223 with 80 grains. usually the typical 50-65 grains. Im assuming that 80 grain note is for guys making their own ammo. but thanks guys for the input I knew I could use it but for the guys who dont understand ammo I had to clarify it. I pulled up a chart online that had every bullet from .17 to 50 cal . pretty crazy how many kinds of rounds are out there. I want to get a .338 lapua :)

Kind of a bummer that you can't get rifle practice with your regular big game rifle by using it on coyotes in the off season.

Sure you can, I've done it since 1980....Just use a .243, switch to 80grs in summer and 100grs for deer season...Keep a chart as to where to move the scope adjustments, check at the range and you are good to go...

You can't use a .22 based on what the regulation states...because a .22 is not a centerfire cartridge....secondly, you CAN use a 25-06 as it IS a .25 caliber rifle...
