what is your rifle sighted in for
I sight most of my deer rifles in at 200 yards, except the 30-30 and have it at 100 yards. How about you guys.

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
I sight all my rifles in to shoot an inch high at 25 yards, and that puts me about 1.5 high at 100 and dead on at 200.
If they are 30-30 or the sort they are sighted in for 100 yds. |
RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
I sight long range rifles (.270, 30-06, 300 WM, etc) in 1" high at 200 yards. That puts me at 3" high at 100, and only 4-6" low (depending on caliber, bullet weight, BC,) at 300 yards. At 400 yards, I could hold just above the back and drop it in the lower part of the kill zone. If the wind cooperates! [:-]

I sight in both my 7mmstw' s and 300 ultra mags to be 2-3/4" high at 100 yards. At 200 yards both will be approx 3-1/2" high.At 300 yards they will be 1/2" to 3/4" high.At 400 yards the stw' s will be 6" low and the ultramags 7" low.At 500 yards the stw' s will be 18" low and the ultramags 20" low.

50yds with iron sighted rifles. 100yds with scopes.

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
I sight my .30-06 for dead-on at 30 yards. There seems to be very little difference in grouping from 30-100 yards. All of my shots at deer have been about 30 yards or less, so this suits me just fine.

300 Win Mag
200 gr nosler partition 3 1/2" high at 100 0 at 300 -10 at 400 -27 at 500 Actual measurements on targets. I hunt in fairly open country and often see game cross canyon so I sight in for the longer shots and am covered on the shorter shots. |
RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
You might want to check out Maximum Point Blank, MPB, range in one of the recent loading manuals. This method establishes a 100 yd. PI for the maximum range to keep your bullet in a given dia. circle. This means for a 6" dia. kill zone your bullet will be 3" high at mid point and 3" low at the MPB distance. Larger game my allow a larger dia. kill zone. Now, if you can estimate range well enough to know your target is within the MPG range, you can just aim for the vital area and fire. You know it will hit within +/- 3" or so of that point. This generally extends your zero point well out past the 200 yd. zero that used to be the standard for scoped hunting rifles.

I sight my rifles in at 100 yards.
Where I hunt, 200 yards would be extremely long. |
RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
For my 45/70, i have that thing dead nuts at 100 yards. For my longer rifles, I zero them at 200-300, depending on the cartridge. Thats for targets though. I like bow range with my 45/70, or just my bow!

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
I sight all my rifles in @ 100 yards as a rule. I did however sight my new BAR Stalker in 270 @ 2.5" high at 100 yards. I' ll be using it for longer shots on a powerline.

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
It' s obvious from the variety of responses that folks are hunting in a wide variety of environments.
I hunt elk in Colorado and the opportunity is there to shoot an animal in heavy timber at close range or across a drainage. I use the point blank method of sighting in. My .300 RUM is sighted in three and a half inches high at 100 yards which puts it dead on at 330 yards. This means that my 180 grain NP will impact within a five inch radius of point of aim from the muzzle out to 370 yards. |
RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
2 1/2" high at 100, 1" high at 200 and 4" low at 300 is how I sight my 7 Rem mag.
|
RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
i sight both my 30-06 and 300 wby mag at 30 yards which put both around 21/2" high at 100 yds and close to dead on at 250 yds. :)

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
I use the Max. Point Blank Range (MPBR) system. It depends on what game I am hunting, what round I am using, ballistic coefficent (BC), bullet weight, and velocity. Good shooting!!

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
It depends on what I will be hunting and where I' m hunting . I might set one for long range and another for short range depending on what type of country I will be hunting and what I will be hunting .

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
my centerfire rifles are sighted dead on at 40 yards.

RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
I " let em eat" !!! I have a 280, 7mag & 30/06 (yep what one will do the others will do, I can only have one woman so I at least have a few different guns!) I sight them all in 3" high at 100 and since I typically shoot light bullets, they typically are " on" in the 250-300yd range. But since getting a Sako/Lazzeroni Warbird, I havent the need for maxing out my other guns anymore. I only hunt with the Warbird and the 280 anymore and then the 280 I only shoot while in the woods. I am cosidering re-sighting it to be only an inch, inch-half high at 100 as a result. My Warbird shoots a 30cal 130 Xbullet at 3900fps, with 3" high at 100 it is dead on at 400 and about 7" low at 500.
LOL my grandfathers old 35 Marlin he left to me isnt scoped, so why bother? If it was scoped (he made me promise I wouldnt because to him, " Its a saddle gun, not built for a scope" !) I would probably have it about 3" high at 100 as well. (However I' m glad I aint stuck with its garden hose trajectory!) Whack em where they stand! ;)\ RA |
RE: what is your rifle sighted in for
Wow, you all are some long range shooters. I have all mine sighted in for 100 yds. Rarely do I shoot over that, so 100 yds. works for me.
