Advice on new rifle purchase
 

I am going to be purchasing a new rifle soon and am interested in recommendations from the forum. I would like to get a " mountain" type rifle in .260 rem. I hunt mainly whitetail in the mountains of VA. I would also like it to be a weather beater as all we have had all year is rain and I expect that to be true this fall also. I look forward to hearing any recommendations and/or direction. Thanks for the help.

Check the Ruger M-77' s " All Weather" Stainless w/synthetic stock.Mine has been is some nasty weather and still looks like new.I' m not sure if it comes in 260 but I believe it does. www.ruger-firearms.com

Virginia Mike, Yes Ruger does make the M-77 " All Weather" in 260 Rem.Check Ruger' s site. It' s available in several different calibers.

look also at the remington model 7 , it' s light weight , is available in the .260 rem. , and comes in a stainless/synthetic stock.

the model 700 mountain rifle LSS is also available in the .260 rem. , and is a stainless/laminate stck rifle

I would look at the Remington Mountain rifle in 260 or 7mm-08.

My understanding is that in the mountains of VA there is dense cover and close shots. Might I recommend a Marling Guide gun in 45/70?

what about a browning micro hunter. or the hunter series rifles? maybe in 7mm-08rem? i hunt in maine where the rain/sleet are the nrom. my medallion ( browning ) has had no probs in that kind of weather.

In addition to the Remington in Model 7 and 700 SS and synthetic consider looking at Ruger' s Compact in .260 Remington. You can have it in SS and synthetic and with a barrel length of only 16.25" . Very compact indeed!

Look into the Remington Mountain Rifle. One of the greats!

I have one in 7mm/08....not sure what' s currently available.

Any of the above in the near-perfect .260 Rem will serve you very well. In fact, it would serve all of us very well, indeed, except this " magnum craze" has most of us believing we need a .338 Win mag for deer and elk!
