Stopping Rust
I have a rifle that I discoverd rust on last week. I have now taken the rust off with a fine grit sand paper and have oiled the spot well. I will also be getting a bluing pen as soon as possible to cover the spot Any other ideas??

RE: Stopping Rust
Get yourself a silicone rag and wipe it down anytime it' s handled. You can also get a silicone impregnated sock and keep it in that.
Don' t use too much oil on them. I don' t oil anything on my guns anymore except moving parts. Oil tends to attract dust and dust can absorb moisture in the air and hold it against the metal. Don' t waste your money on the pens. I' ve tried them and they stink. Either get a blueing kit, or take it somewhere and have it done by a good ' smith that knows his stuff. He can make it look like new. |
RE: Stopping Rust
My suggestion is buy some RIG and a sheep skin.Everytime you handle your guns wipe it down with the RIG saturated sheep skin.I agree the Bluing pens aren' t much. I found 44-40 Cold Blue is the best I' ve ever used.Brownells sells it. You might try to find it locally though. UPS has added a HazMat charge for shipping it.I hope you can stop your rusting problem.

If you use 0000 steel wool and not sand paper you probably wouldn' t have to be reblueing your rifle . You can use it dry or with a light gun oil . I use silicone rags on the outside and only lightly oil the action ,then keep a humidifier in the safes and never have had a problem with rust .

RE: Stopping Rust
One thing that I read in a magazine that I haven' t tried yet, is to take a pencil and mark all over the rusted area and then erase it off. That is suppost to work, so they say in that article. You may try it and let us know how it works.

RE: Stopping Rust
handloader1 The RIG I use comes in a small plastic jar(it used to come in a tube). The sheepskins are available from shooter suppliers along with RIG. I' ll take my sheepskin wipe. Apply the RIG to it and work it into the sheepskin. Then I carefully wipe the metal of the firearm down.I' ve done this for probably 25 years and never had the slightest rust.I' m not familiar with a RIG kit.RIG has been around for many years and the way it works has me convinced it' s one of the best.I know
www.midsouthshooterssupply.com has RIG A small jar of RIG will last for a long time.Use it sparingly. I checked MSS site. Rig 1oz jar # 036-R101 $1.73 3.75 jar. # 036-R103 $3.02 Sheepskin # 036-R451 $5.99. Midsouth does have a 40.00 min order which is easy to meet LOL.. Ruger Redhawk |

RE: Stopping Rust
you could also try a reloaders case polishing cloth. it has a pretty mild grit to it and has buffed out some minor rusting over the years.the key is prevention. as soon as you get out of the field or home the first thing you should do is get it out of the case and wipe it down. those egg foam linings in gun cases hold the moisture to the gun. i have also switched to the birchwood casey synthetic oil in the spout can and love it. no smell and great in cold weather. it leaves a nice film on the metal parts without feeling too slick. i always wipe down the barrel as i was told the oils in your hands will do damage to a dry gun.
