Savage 99 info??

Hello gentelmen, i just picked up a used Savage 99 in 300 sav. Its in very good shape, no wearing on the bluing near the action and it has the rotary counter. I paid $375 for this gun and it has a letter ( E ) stamped in it near the lever pivot. the serial num. is 407018 Would anyone know what year or any info on this gun? Thank you for your time

Need a little more information (or a pic to really help you...)...it appears by the SN you provided that you have a 99 R/RS or EG...most likely the EG.

Is there checkering on the "pistol grip"? They didn't start checkering the pistol grips on the 99EG until 1940...while the 99 R/RS were checkered and the stocks were heavier with a rounded forend tip...the R's are worth a great deal more.

Based on the SN is is likely an early model made before 1940ish...the SN's starting at 340000 around 1932...with 1060000 ending in 1960. SN started at 350000 in 1935.

Hope that helps...I have about a dozen Model 99's in various calibers...they are a great rifle... I started hunting with one in 308 and continued to for many years (and still do from time to time)...they are great guns! In good shape, that rifle is probably worth between $400 and $1000 depending on the model and shape.

A little more research shows your gun was made in 1941...as someone else posted the link for dates above as well...

99RS = Special Sights (They had a Lyman aperture sight)...it's not one of these

99R = Heavy Stocked Rifle (heavy pistol grip checkered stock with rounded forend tip...22 and 24" barrel's available)...don't believe from the pics that is a R...

99 EG = Standard Weight Rifle...this is what I believe your rifle based on the pics...

It is in amazing condition! You got a smoking deal...my books place it between $650 and $900 (probably closer to the $650 side...)
