Where has all the .22LR ammo gone?

Its been well over 6, weeks now can some explain why a fresh stock of .22 long rifle ammunition is not entering into the market place in great amounts many of the online dealsers are still listed as out of stock, along with many of the outdoor retail stores. I can understand running out with all the new firearms being sold and everyone stocking up. But I have yet to see any of these retailers showing the item back in stock. I find this very odd because both the bulk cheap stuff and the expensive target/hunting ammo is GONE. One would think one form of this would start to filter back into the market. anyone have ideas on this? My thinking is the dept. of home land gun control is buying it all up so you might have a nice gun but you can't get no bullets......

Psylocide 02-19-2013 01:41 PM

Check this thread out... it's BS for hunters, that's all I know.

I was sick of not finding any, so when it came in, you better believe I cleared a shelf. I'm not usually one to add to a problem, but this is unbelievable.

jeepkid 02-19-2013 02:13 PM

They had a couple bricks of 500 at the gunshow last weekend...$90 each.

s. il. hntr 02-19-2013 02:23 PM

I find it very hard to believe there wasn't some warehoused for after the initial buyout. Never did see any of my local stores restock the shelves even once. Hell I can still find .223 and 40 S&W, which are the rounds DHS are hoarding. Something stinks.

steve d 02-19-2013 02:54 PM

CCI,Winchester,Remington are they stalling to run up the price when they do put them back on the shelf. Supply and demand let us get hungry then re-stock the store at 2 or 3 X what they cost before the run? IMHO these are the 3 big producers that should of been able to put product out some place.

s. il. hntr 02-19-2013 03:00 PM

that could very well be what is happening. like i said before, i cant believe there wasn't some in reserve. still dont know why .22lr though.

s. il. hntr 02-19-2013 03:05 PM

Dang it, the light bulb just went off. I was in Cabelas about a week after Newtown, and noticed Winchester changed the 333 & 555 white box stuff to a new box and the price did go up. Same round , different box, and higher price.

ihookem1 02-19-2013 05:12 PM

Because 22lr is survival ammo. I can shoot rabbits or deer with it. I can protect my home with them and does not cost me .25 a round,,, yet.

GTX63 02-20-2013 03:22 AM

Guys in the gun depts at Walmart tell me, if they get any in, it may be once a week. What they get is gone in 2 hours or less. People leaving their phone numbers, standing in the isle waiting for the stockers, etc.

It cost money to have inventory sitting around, most companies manufacture items JIT.
Just-In-Time manufacturing, reorder levels for certain inventory items are set, and new stock is ordered only when those levels are reached. There is no overstocking of parts or items, which saves on space in the warehouse. This manufacturing strategy can lead to improvements in quality and efficiency. It also can lead to higher profits and a larger return on the company's investment.

WV Hunter 02-20-2013 06:45 AM

Survival ammo is right. Even at the ridiculous prices some are paying now .22 is CHEAP compared to everything else. I haven't seen any loaded rifle ammunition that is really much under $40/box of 20 now. Insane. I bought a box of .243 for my son within this past year for $20. Now almost double if you can actually find it.

I refuse to buy any ammo right now. I know it will sort itself out eventually, and should come back down - at least some.

emtrescue6 02-20-2013 03:39 PM

I am just glad I reload....rarely have I bought any center-fire ammo in several years. I am frustrated I didn't have as much 22LR or 17HMR stashed away as I liked...especially considering between my wife and daughter we shoot a good amount of 22LR. I found 2 bricks of Remington 22LR around Christmas and bought them both as a Cabela's in PA...haven't seen any since. I woulda thought it would have cleared up a little by now but I still have seen hardly any powder or primers anywhere.

steve d 02-20-2013 07:29 PM

JIT=real time production Major Woods brings up a strong point, but I have to ad its been over 6 weeks, productions even at increased cost should of balanced by this time. So what is the unseen hand controlling this event? Corprate hold out to get even higher profits from the panic buyers> Something is missing and I wish I could put my finger on it....

sconnyhunter 02-20-2013 07:54 PM

You can also add, to the JIT manner of production. The time of year it is.
This is when EVERY supplier is rebounding from Dec. TAX SEASON. They have to pay tax on all inventory on hand.

So it takes time to rebuild what was lost.
Compound this with the re-election of the greatest gun salesman in history, and you have a shortage of product that hasn't been seen in several years.

What is 333 and 555 stuff?

s. il. hntr 02-21-2013 01:57 PM

Its just the plain ammo with either 333 rounds or 555 rounds per box, but they started putting it in a fancy box and raised the price.

This is so frustrating. Nothing on Wisconsin shelves either. I've never seen such a thing like this happen. I know a guy who took out his retirement early and was willing to pay the massive tax so he could hoard. Not too happy with him. But the current political climate is making people crazy.

yeah I hear ya there. never thought there would be a day I didn't see .22lr in a store.

Kitana2009 08-25-2013 07:19 AM

Why there is no ammo

I work in sporting goods selling ammo. The reason we don't have any is not because of some shortage or anything like that. It is because there are these people and a lot of them who are rude people that I hate who think "They are going to stop making 22 ammo and there is a shortage" BUT THEY ARE WRONG and buy all the ammo we get as soon as we get it. THESE PEOPLE ARE HOARDING IT. TELL ANY IDIOT YOU KNOW DOING THIS TO JUST STOP BUYING THE AMMO. Spread the word that this is not true and yell at people you catch doing this. The people who sell the ammo to the customers can't tell them how they really feel about it so please do it for them. You have no idea how much I hate the 10 people who are there everyday buying 3 boxes and bringing 5 other people with them to get 3 boxes each more for them. And the whole time yelling at me because we dont have an unlimited supply for them. And they are all hoarding or re selling it. If you see someone at a walmart doing this just punch them in the nose for me will ya. (not really just bitch them out for what they are doing anyway) These people have at least 20 boxes of 1000 rounds of 22 shells to sell and to hoard. DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE PEOPLE PLEASE

Sheridan 08-25-2013 02:06 PM

The government is telling "us" how much ammo "we" can have.

.............and now "we" have stores telling "us" how much ammo "we" can have.

What is this world (ok - the USA) coming too ?!?!

ronlaughlin 08-25-2013 04:45 PM

Myself, i am pleased to report that on the counter of our local gun shop were boxes of 22lr for sale this past Friday. Three 100 round boxes came home with me. It was the first i saw 22lr for sale since the new year.

Exactly.

This run on ammo is being driven by the conspiracy theorists, the gunshow promoters, online ammo retailers and yes; sometimes, your LGS.

Yep, there's oodles of .22 ammo out there. It's in the hands of the scalpers and scam artists, like this guy:

This. A 1000 times this. Want to see where all the ammo is? Go do a search on Gunbroker.com for ammo. Last time I checked there were about 7000 current ammo auctions each for a 100, 500 or even 1000 rounds of ammo. Do the math on that. And I have seen as many as 13,000 ammo auctions in progress.

Looks like at least one facet of Obama's multi pronged attack on gun owners has worked like a charm.

What a pity.

Wow. $15.95 for a box of plain-old Remington "Thunderbolts"?

Meh, I'll let him keep them. I'll just have to be a better shot with what I still have until this blows over, I suppose?

There are a lot of things to criticize Obama about but this is a self inflicted wound. Dumb @$$es need to stop paying these gouge prices until the hording scalpers out there stop buying all the ammo off the shelves with the intent of reselling it at 4 or 5 times the price.

If they all of a sudden found themselves sitting on 10,000 rounds of ammo that no one would bid on I bet they would slack off a bit on their daily sweep and clear of local store shelves.

+1 This is why I refuse to buy from 2nd hand sellers.

falcon 08-29-2013 08:31 AM

The Lawton, OK Wal-Mart on Quanah Parker has Remington .22 in 225 round packages for $10 and change.

GRIZZLYMAN 08-29-2013 01:19 PM

I probably bought around 4,500 rounds of .22 LR in July at Academy sporting goods. I walked in one Sunday morning and saw bricks and figured out when there shipments were. I live a mile away from them and work from home, so it was easy to drive over there in the mornings when they opened and see what they had.

HatchieLuvr 08-29-2013 03:28 PM

AHOLES buying it up to resell on the net!!! :hit:

JW 08-29-2013 04:28 PM
