300 Win Mag

I think I am going to pick up a 300 WM. This will be primarily for elk. I am more interested in accuracy than looks or weight.

Any suggestions?

That would be an excellent choice, IMO. I have really grown fond of the new Winchester M70 Extreme Weather's. I have one in 270 Winchester, topped with a Zeiss Conquest.

2 more rifles I think I "need" ~ a .270 and a .300 WM

Great elk caliber!

I didn't realize that Weatherby came out with a Series 2 Vanguard. I have been reading reviews on it and it sounds like it is a great rifle with Sub MOA guarenteed with 3 shot groups. I will need to check one out.

Only 2 more? haha.... .270 is my favorite all around caliber and I use it the most for just about everything, but I do love my 300 WM when I need it.

Yup as soon as I get back I will be picking one up.

I had one of the newer Weatherby Vanguards in .300 WSM and the accuracy was outstanding plus, they are a real "looker"---Against my better judgement, I sold it to a guy at the range that offered me too much to turn down, mainly due to how accurately it shot---the Vanguards are the most rifle I've seen for the cost---a little heavy, but dead on accurate--- John

Got .243 for both deer & yotes (M700 might be my most accurate), got 7MM RM ~ shoots as flat as a .270 and hits as hard as a .30-06 (i'm a believer).

.338 WM if I in bear country - period.

Want the .270 for deer exclusively and the .300 for elk.

BTW - Always look for your posts also ! :happy0001:

.300 WM is a great round for sure. I think its probably the most versatile big round when you look at all the aspects. IF I ever felt the need for something big, that is what I would get. As it is, my .280 with handloads will work perfectly on anything I'll likely ever hunt, including Elk. Post it up when you get it... :D

I have a 7MM...haven't shot it in ages, great round and flat as Kansas! I have really fallin in love with my 270 WSM...flat, fast, accurate and easy on the shoulder!

My favorite open country elk rifle is a stainelss M700 with a Douglas 26" barrel chambered in .300 WM. I have another one with the 24" factory barrel that is a very good shooter. Both of these rifles have VX3 4.5x14 scopes, and shoot the 180 Nosler Partition better than any all copper bullets.

I find that the synthetic stocks are very nice to have on an elk rifle if you are going to a completely different enviornment for the hunt (VT to CO for example).

If weight isn't an issue, gotta love a 700 Sendero... An All-class All-weather with style for miles...

I pulled the trigger on a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 300 Win Mag. Looking forward to receiving it and found it for a great price, $506 delivered!

Nice I am sure you will enjoy it. I have shot the .300 a lot great cartridge.
Handload full house reloader 22 and a 180 Nosler Partition and Bingo. Meat in the freezer! Always worked best for me.
I sold mine and now use a 300 wsm when appropriate I am very happy with it.
