I love the .243 and used it for years for deer. But I also have a 7-08 and also used it successfully for deer. Either will work fine. The 7-08 delivers more energy using the same case as the .243 with just slightly more recoil.

Thanks for all the help guys. We are still just looking but this gives me a direction to look in. I like the Remington model 7. But I will let her pick the gun that fits best. Sounds like either caliber will do the job.

One of the most popular bullets available for reloading is the 7mm (.284). I have been reloading the 7mm 08 for years for my daughter's rifle. Due to the better B.C. numbers I'd go with the 7mm over the .243. Happy hunting!

When i lived in NY that was the case but i now live in TN and 7mm08 is common here,even the big box store seem to stock it. But it is more expensive.
I personally like my 243...PLENTY for deer.

Any decent gun shop carries 7-08 in a variety of bullet weights. So getting ammo would not even be a consideration.

If you are caught between the 243 and 7-08, just split the difference and get a 260 Rem. Seriously though both of your picks are great cartridges, you cant go wrong with either but I would seriously look at the 260 Rem. while you are at it. Personally I would make it easy and just buy all three. Problem solved!

Look at the Savage Lady Hunter, they are chambered in the 243 and 7-08 and are built with a lady in mind.

I would recommend one of the new "lite" bolt action rifles in .243, that feels good in HER HANDS, and have it cut down to fit her LOP with a new pachmayr decelerator pad on it.

Take a look at these;

You may already have made your choice, but here's a late input anyway. Either cartridge will kill white tailed deer. The 243 Win. and a quality 100 gr. hunting bullet is bad medicine on deer sized game. This is what my daughter uses.

However, I am a fan of "bigger' (to an extent). I would go the 7mm/08 route. The 7mm/08 Rem. is a wonderful round. Most handle 130 gr. bullets very well. The recoil is not all that bad either.

As far as which rifle ... in my opinion fit and feel is a big deal when it comes to a shooter being comfrotable and confident. If your wife is small framed, don't forget to look at so called "youth" rifles. These have a shorter "standard" lengths of pull (LOP).

If you expect her to really get into hunting may I suggest a Styer Pro Hunter "Mountain". Styer rifles are very well made and everyone that I have ever shot has been big time accurate. The factory trigger is very nice. This rifle also has spacers in the butt plate that can be removed (or added) to better fit the shooter's LOP. It is a bit pricey but in my book a good value for anyone that is, or will become, a dedicated hunter.
