Your favorite gun and why?
What is your type of favorite gun or guns and why?
|
Ahh! I stand corrected then, Thanks for clearing that up.

My absolute favorite gun is my Browning BAR Safari II in 30-06. I have a deal with Mr. Browning, as the rifle likes to be called. I put him in front of a deer and he knocks them down. :D
If I hit a deer anywhere close to right, they go down right there. Even the few I didn't hit quite right didn't go out of sight. Now that is really more due to the caliber and round I use (Federal Premium w/ 165 gr Nosler Partitions), but I give Mr. Browning a lot of credit anyway. |
For what?????

Bolt action rifles, for the precision.

The one that I feel most confident in once I have planned out my hunt.

My old Browning Auto 5. I love all the history that goes with it.

My favorite is my older (1998) Savage model 110 chambered in .308 (back in the late 90's Savage was not doing well, and was trying desperately to avoid bankruptcy). Back then Savage made *everything* as a model 110. .243, .25-06, .270, .308, .30-06, etc... They all shared the same wooden stock configuration. Savage just redid the chamber and barrel. For short actions, they just put a big "block" or some sort down in behind the magazine.
Anyway, my rifle just fits me like a glove. It is lethally accurate, doesn't kick as bad as a .30-06, and will still drop a deer right in its tracks. |
If I were to have to narrow my rifle collection down to one single rifle for all my hunting I would toss out all my bolt actions and keep my Marlin Guide Gun .45-70. It is light, accurate enough, and will drop anything that gets in its way with my stout handloads from ground hogs to brown bear.

The one that goes through the deer, then kills the mountain lion and then it knocks the grizzly on it's azz. (all with one shot of course):happy0157:

Anyone that goes bang and I have fun doing it!!!!!!!

When you get to the point where you have more than a couple firearms, "favorite" isn't the right word. I have firearms that I like to use in certain situations. A Ruger 1 in 30'06 often accompanies me to a shooting house. An Abolt in 280 is the one that most often goes with me when I'm climbing a tree. A Rem 700 in 7'08 is the one I normally grab when I'm walking a creek bottom. A Rem 700 in 270 is a dream at the range but rarely sees field action unless my son uses it. A ruger 77 in ..................

Good answer Wayspr!
Just one? Really. I think Wayspr's answer is about the best so far, but CURRENTLY my favorite is my old, non #-matching sporterized Swedish Model 94. I bought it at a gun show about 20 years for $175.00. It had no matching #'s, had been buggered a bit on the receiver where some bubba tried to start a drill and tap but gave up after scarring the reciever a bit. It had a pretty nicely fitted compact Bishop stock on it though. I went ahead and had Dick Williams in Saginaw Michigan drill and tap it and cut and turn a bolt for it. I kept the original bolt as I had a collection of many swedish rifle parts from years of collecting them. The rifle also received a Timney trigger and I had a Buehler style safety installed. The bore is fine and the chamber is good. With certain loads I can keep my shots under 1.5" at 100 yrds using a 5X fixed scope. The best I've found for it so far is Norma's factory load stuffed with the 156 gr Round Nose Alaska bullet. It is light, quick pointing, shoots the venerable 6.5 X 55 round, and is a pleasure to tote and shoot. Someday I'll save up and try to add a REAL Swede 94 to my collection. A fully military and complete model. They are getting harder to find, especially if you want it authentic and full matching. But until that time I'll continue to enjoy carrying my sporter 94 for deer in the Michigan swamps and woods. |
Ruger 10/22, we r not talking deer rifles right?

Of all I have in two safes it would be the Sako .243 and here is why---That's 9 shots, 8 of which you can cover with a dime.

That was at 50 yards when I put a new Leupold 4-12x40mm on it and after bore sighting it with the scope on 12x. The high shot was the fouling shot followed by the last eight. I'm terribly nearsighted and my eyesight is only correctable to 20-40 with my glasses on, so I needed to see what it would do where I could see good. My Dad used to shoot groups like that at 100 with factory ammo when he had it and I inherited it when he passed on 9/11/11. After knowing what it would do where I could see the target good I moved out to 100 and shot six more at this target. The gun will obviously do dime groups out there too if I could see good that far.

I dont own any guns.

I can pick one. One model that is. Ruger No. 1 for me for life. I have them in lots of calibers. They are one of the best off hand guns ever made. There are rumors of them being inaccurate but I guess being a reloader that's never been a issue for me. I've one a ton of local shoots with them against custom built guns so I guess that accuracy thing is out the window. Even the 375 h&h can stay under 1" groups if I'm doing my part.
I love the trigger. I've heard complaints about creep and all that I guess I don't know what creep is because once I put my finger on the trigger it starts taking pressure off the sear. I do have two guns that could use a little stoning. I've never had one go over 4.5 on the trigger scale. I've seen other gun models hit 7 & 8 pounds of trigger pull for factory triggers. Most mine are sitting a 3-3.5 lbs. Would it be nice to go to 2.5 sure. I don't own target rifles but thats great for clover leaf groups for me. Stock- Straight stock guns are my favorite. Smooth, fast, come up like a shotgun. It may kick but it don't bust your face and your shoulder. Weight and balance of the guns are perfect. It's just in my opinion mind you is one of the best off hand guns ever made. But who shoots shots off hand? Ummm I do given the situation or competition. Put it on sand bags and it's a damn fine bench gun for competition. I've won as many shoots as I've lost. That's a lot our club shoots all summer. Shot cycle? In a steel challenge shoot, five shots from 100m to 500m my time is nearly 20 seconds faster than bolt action guys believe that or not. That time separates winners from losers. Distance shots and accuracy. Our little big game shoot which is closest to center of the heart on an elk target at 550 yards (not a bench shoot standing, kneeling or prone). I've taken 3 1st place, 2 2nd place and 1 3rd place wins out of 7 years of the competition. I missed a year fell below target going for the heart. Once using my 25-06 Twice the 270 win and Three times the 300 win mag. I said closest to the heart. Out of the seven shoots I hit the heart five times even in wind. That my Ruger No. 1's. Not going to convince me they don't shoot. If a gun was ever built for a person that was my designed gun. It is my all around rifle I don't need any other rifle for any other reason. I did have to shim the forearm on the 22-250 that is the only flaw I have ever had an issue with. And they don't like as much pressure on the forearm as other rifle designs do. But with that in mind it's all money in the bank. It's the only con that I could ever say about them. And if I ever do build a target rifle it will be on a No. 1 action. If the factory rifles put holes in holes imagine what a trigger job and competition barrel will do. Look out Whittington Center here I come. Well that will be after the kids are raised. I do have one gun they all look alike they all feel alike they all shoot alike to a point. They can be competition rifles, hunting rifles, brush guns. Ruger did it right in my opinion. Best gun/s in my safe Ruger No. 1 That's passion boys and earned dedication. Dispute if you like but Ruger No. 1 has given me everything I ever asked out of a rifle and more. |
I wouldn't dispute a thing you said about a Ruger and if I bought another one it would be the #1. I have a M77 with tang safety in 25-06 and it's one shooting son of a gun and deadly on antelope and deer out in Wyoming.

Ruger Mark II .22lr pistol. Absolutely love this pistol. Bought it when I was in high school for $90 from a buddy that got in trouble with his folks for buying it and needed to sell it quick. I'm hard pressed to decide I'd rather pass it down rather than have it buried with me. Nothing fancy, just a stellar shooter, and when it's in my hand, it hits whatever I need it to. We've been swimming in creeks/ponds/rivers on more than a couple occasions saving my hounds from coons trying to drown them, and killed more coons than I'd ever care to count. Eats anything I feed it and puts them on target. I'd give up a lot of people before I'd give up that pistol.

My favorite rifle is a Marlin 336SS 30-30 that's topped with a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32mm scope. Yeah just about any rifle will kill a deer, and do it very well. But when deer hunting "out in the woods" a lever action rifle in 30-30 or 35 remington just feels like the right tool for the task at hand.

I love M16 because I always use it while playing Counter Strike. |
