Big fan of the Savages. Prefer the non-Axis models over the others, mostly for the trigger, but the Axis trigger can be VERY nice with a simple spring replace (lighter or pen springs, or aftermarket-more expensive).

On the most budget friendly end, I'd go to a store and handle the Ruger American, Marlin XL, and Savage Axis and buy whichever the one feels good and fits you best. (the Ruger is a bit more expensive than the other 2 -- I'm partial to Savages myself). If you can afford to go up a little bit ($100 or so), I'd do the same thing with the Savage 11 / 111 series and the Weatherby Vanguard 2.

Ruger, Marlin, or Savage. You cant go wrong with any of those. I am partial to the Savage personally. Steer clear of the Savage Axis or Savage Edge unless you dont mind a terrible trigger. Spend the extra money and get a Savage with the Accutrigger. Timmney makes a aftermarket trigger for the Edge, Axis but that is another $100 on top of a $350 rifle. Cheaper in the long run to buy a Savage with a Accutrigger. I have seen Ruger Americans for as low as $319 brand new, that is a real good deal for a rifle as good as the Ruger.

I'm a fan of the Howa 1500 for a cheaper rifle...I just bought one and love it! It will do anything a $1200 rifle will do...

Thank you everyone for the responses. I'm going to the local rifle shop tomorrow to see which of these models fits the best. I'm still stuck between a rock and a hard place as far as chambers. I've been reading a lot and seems like you cant go wrong with anything like a .207, .308 or 30-06. Mostly where I hunt I do have to take long range shots with accuracy but all three seem to be able to do it.

What's your budget? $300 or $500, or??

Best bang for the buck out there in my opinion is Tikka and Savage...for a few more bucks one can go to a Browning A-Bolt...

I have several new savages and I agree with others, spend the extra $100 now and get one with the accu-trigger...I really like my Model 10 in .308 (a little more $$) but my Model 11 in 7mm-08 could probably be had new for $400 easily, accu-trigger, detachable mag, light, accurate and shoots nicely...for another $100 though you can get the Tikka T-3 in stainless...bolt as smooth as butter, trigger breaks like glass (adjustable), shoots very well (sub-MOA), detachable mag....I think I paid about $525 for mine but it's left handed and a magnum cal, so the right handed standard cal's should be easy to find well below that...

Most importantly...find a rifle that fits you and feels good against your shoulder...

Of the three calibers you mentioned guess which one I would suggest! You can't go wrong with the 06 with so many different bullet weights and styles for just about anything you want to shoot.

If you can go a little more than 500, the Browning A-bolt would be my choice. I'd try and stay away from the cheap marlins or cheap savages. The savage with the accu trigger is only a little more and is a really good buy.
