Browning X-bolt 243 or Ruger 257 Roberts?
I found a used X-bolt browning but it has a 20" barrel for a good price. I also am looking at a new Ruger M-77 in a 257 Roberts with a 22" bbl. Which is better deal the new Ruger is $110 more but the Browning has a few good dings in stock and the short bbl.

Either one would need a 24" (minimum) barrel to achieve maximum efficiency. If you hand load go with the .257. If you are buying factory I would go with .243. Now with saying that I am assuming the .257 will be more expensive if buying factory loads and maybe harder to find loaded with premium bullets. As far as barrel length being 20" and 22" I wouldn't let it concern me other than the handling of the rifle.

I just love my roberts. It is a ruger as well and one fine shooter to. Sometimes it is difficult finding factory loads for it, but I reload so its not a problem. I am sure that you can find a shop that carries the shells for it. I dont have any thing bad to say about the roberts.

Here is my .02! I have experience with both rifles but in different calibers than you are looking at. The X-Bolt was much more accurate than the M77. Other than that it is really up to you and what feels best to you. FWIW, I sold both rifles and replaced them with a Winchester M70.
