Rust
Wasn't sure where to post this, I just got back from my Alaska Brown bear hunt & my Win. Mod 70 .338 has some rust on it & the Leupold scope mounts. I've cleaned & scrubbed it twice w/ a toothbrush & Rem Oil and there's still some rust on it. Any other products to use that are really good? I know it won't all come off, but I'd like to get a little more off. I guess this was bound to happen being in the rain for 2+ weeks...

You should have cleaned it while you were there. That being said, you will be able to get it off. Try Hopps first and if that doesn't work, oil and steel wool. Google and gunsmiths are your friend......

Had good luck with oil and "0000" steel wool.

coolbrze0,
Was your hunt along the coast; near the ocean? Like say Kodiak, the Aleutian Chain or the southwest coast? If so, my guess would be that you may be suffering from some salt corrosion. I've heard (not seen) that even some stainless steel can suffer salt corrosion. Just my guess. |
Flitz will take it off. Good luck.

We cleaned them in the field but bear hunting 21 days in Kodiak Alaska is bound to have some affect on your firearm if you're familiar w/ their weather :( Besides rust, I also brought this home:

Good grief what did that thing weigh? Did you shoot it with the 338?
