Need help sighting in Mossberg 500 Slugster

Just got a 20 ga. Mossberg 500 Slugster with iron sights and a synthetic stock the other day with Hornady SST slugs to go with it.

Fifty dollars in ammo later, it shoots about 6 inches high at 25 yards with the rear sight moved down as far as i can get it.

What do i need to do to get it to shoot lower?

Do i need a different rear sight that can adjust lower? Does my gun just not like the Hornadys? The box says they shoot at 1900 fps...should i get some slugs that shoot slower or just try a different brand?

Any help would be appreciated!

I have the same gun but with a scope, mine likes Remington Accu-Tip 3". Shotguns are very iffy, same model/brand can like different ammo. Try Lightfields also

A taller front sight will lower your point of impact.

How do the sights attach to the barrel? Is the front sight soldered or brazed on? Does the rear sight attach with screws or is it pressed into a dovetail slot?

It will be as simple as installing a taller front sight, if you can remove it from the barrel.

I prefer the fully rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount. You'll realize more of the potential of the ammo you are using with a scope as compared to rifle sights.

The front sight seems like its glued on there somehow with a brownish type of substance that is about the color of liquid nails. I don't know what it is.

I am planning to put a scope on it but was going to go this season without it. I do have a 4X30 Tasco scope on my .22 WMR, would that scope work ok for slugs? Would the scope rings that go directly on the dovetail on my .22 WMR work for the rail mount that would go onto the reciever?

If so then i just need to buy the rail mount.

Thanks for the help!

Your existing rings probably will be compatibel with the base you install on the receiver, but I can't say for sure.

Also, you may be disappointed in the accuracy you get with this setup. The barrel and the scope will not be precisely locked together. You may do OK if the barrel nut is tightened as much as you can get it, but I've seen guys get frustrated with POI changes. Some guns seem to work just fine.

If you don't need to shoot more than say 75 yds, installing better rifle sights that allow you to get your POI where it should be may be the best bet. At least with this setup, the front and rear sights are fixed to the barrel.

Scope rings?

Sounds like what you are describing are scope rings the fit the grooved receiver of a .22 mag. Those rings will not fit the bases you need to use on the 500. You need rings that fit Weaver type bases.

I have a mossberg 500 that came with a rifled slug barrel and i couldnt find anything to shoot well out of it. rem accu tips shot the worst for me. since i only need a slug gun for one wmu i take my smooth bore mossberg slugster. i'd say put a scope on it if those are grouping well for you.
