The guy who farms my hayground down in SD, has bigger rifles but does all of his deer hunting with his 22-250. He has a 243 and a 6.5x55 but when opening day comes around he is packing his 22-250. I was never very happy with any of my 243' s for deer. I had a 6mm Remington which would not shoot spire points in the heavier bullets so I shot 100 grain Hornady round nose bullet in it they worked better for me.

bratcat ,
is it a savage bolt , or a savage lever ( model 99 ) ?? just wondering , levers are my favorite action type to use because of the thickets where i hunt .

If you' re happy with your gun, great. A smaller caliber that you shoot well is better than a big caliber that you struggle with. You are somewhat rare on this forum for two reasons:

1) You' re not " magnum obsessed"
2) You admit to missing an occaisional shot. Sometimes I think I' m the only one out there that can' t shoot the wings off a fly at 200 yards! :D

RE: don' t laugh

Bratcat, I' m not laughing either. The .243 win is a fine deer cartridge. True it is a little lite for very big deer. I tend to think of the .243 as a cartridge for a more seasoned hunter, someone who can " call" their own shots. Welcome to the boards, NBH. LOL this season.[:)
This is absolutely correct. One thing that needs mentioning is it is EASIER to call your shots when using a very precise shooting, light recoiling rifle like a .243!
