.300 Win Mag - fav cartridges?
Hey guys,
Well, with the new .300 Win Mag in the safe and the range waiting, I figured I' d ask this question of those that use it. First, please, please, please, nobody say the words ' they' ll all kill a deer,' ' whatever shoots best out of your gun' or anything to that effect. I bought the gun, I know that just about any bullet from it will kill anything that walks, and that I should pick the cartridge that my individual gun shoots the best. :D Whew. So, what' s your favorite bullet for deer-sized game, and your favorite for elk-sized? I need to get off on a good start picking the bullets, so that I can sight it for both animals. It' ll get some work in the deer woods first, before I can find elk country to hunt, but I' d like cartridges specific to both animals. Thanks for any advice! |

165 Hornady interlock boattail for deer
200 grain Swift A-Frame for the bigger stuff. |

My wife & I both shoot 300-win mags. Her' s is a Remington model-700, mine is a Ruger M-77. Both rifles shoot Federal Premium 180-grain Nosler Partitions very well. I have killed at least 10-elk & 30-deer with this rifle & ammunition combo.
Pick up a box & let us know how they shoot in your rifle. |

When I was shooting a 300 win mag,I liked the 180grain noslers for elk, deer and antelope.

165gr. sierra gameking SPBT. for deer.

RE: .300 Win Mag - fav cartridges?
300Win mag is one gun that loves 180gr bullets. My vote is for 180gr Nosler Partitions for elk. Not sure what for deer. I would say a lighter bullet like 150gr. Nosler Partitions is one bullet that does what I ask for. It expands violently on impact to cause damage to the boiler room and then discards most of the front end to keep penetrating.

When I was buying ammunition, I liked the Federal HE 200gr partition better than the 180 gr. I am assuming you are not using a semiautomatic. Since reloading, I like the 180 gr Barnes XBT for elk and for deer the 165.

If your gun shoots the Federal Premium ammo with 180 grain Nosler Partitions, but them use them and you need not ever look any farther for any game with the 300 win Mag. The only other thing I might even try would be the Winchester failsafes. Same grain 180. The 300 win mag was made for 180 grain bullets.

I use 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips when I load for the .300 Win. Mag. They are very accurate and are extremely deadly on whitetail deer.

RE: .300 Win Mag - fav cartridges?
For deer I would use a 180 gr. Barnes XBT, and for elk I would use a 200 gr. Barnes XFB. Good luck.

Ditto Vapodog!!!! For an all-arounder, consider the 180gr Nosler Partition.

RE: .300 Win Mag - fav cartridges?
I' ve never used the .300 Win Mag on deer but my brother-in-law has with 180 Sierras to very good effect. I also loaded Barnes " X" in 180 grain for a friend in Alaska that used a .300 Win Mag. I was with him when he took a large bull caribou and on three different outings black bears. Each of those animals required only one shot and each were through and through penetration. All of the exit wounds were approximately 50 cent piece sized and looked like an X, (or in other words about like a four bladed broadhead wound, except larger). We never recovered a bullet....and my friend swears by them!

My wife and I both shoot .300s. I have used it on every thing from praire dogs (130 grain HPs) to bear.
When I first started shootin this particular caliber about 20 years ago, I used whatever I could find. As I became more particular about meat, I began to realize that soft point bullets just did not (although the kill was still effective) do the job I wanted. With non-solid or non-partition type bullets, the cartridge destroys too much meat to suit my tastes. I then started using Barnes-X, Speer Grand Slam, Nosler Partition and Winchester FAILSAFE. Much less meat loss. For deer I use 165 grain bullets; for elk I use 165 and 180 grain bullets. Your particular tastes may be different, but for me I want to be able to take home the opposite shoulder. |
RE: .300 Win Mag - fav cartridges?
I plan to use Winchester Premium with 180 gr. Fail Safe with my Tikka T3 300 WM for Elk this fall. I had it out to the range the past 2 weekends. I' d say the combination of the ammunition and rifle are the most accurate I' ve owned. Today, once I had it sighted to where I wanted, I put 6 shots in 2 very tight groups 3 rounds all touching in one group and 3 rounds touching in the other within 1 in. at 100 yds.
It seems to me anyway that this particular premium load is consistent in performance as any I' ve tried. I haven' t used the Fail Safe before, but have heard good things about it holding together well on large game like Elk. I hope to have the opportunity to find out! :) |

180 grain Nosler Partition or the 200 grain Nosler Accubond.
