RE: 8mm Rem Mag versus .338 Win Mag

I doubt you will be disappointed with your .338 Win Mag. I have used them with great success, (though most of my game experience has been with the 250 Nosler Partitions). I carried a SS Ruger 77 for five years in Alaska. It was always the gun that went in the gun boot on the ATV. (I just couldn' t bring myself to put a blued wooden stock gun in the boot. However the synthetic SS Ruger took it all in stride.) Now I did on a number of times hunt with other rifles where I walked in and they didn' t have to get the " boot" , so to speak...(pun intended).

Of the game I shot with the 250 Partitions, I never recovered one fired at game. And that included shooting nearly lengthwise through Caribou. That bullet and cartridge combination gave me the faith to know I could reach vital organs on any Alaskan big game from " ANY" angle. It never let me down either!

Good luck with your new .338!

akbound,

I have not made the purchase yet for the .338 win. But it is next on the list.

NBH,

To its credit, the 8mmRemMag SHOULD have been a wonderful and well accepted round. I' ve never shot one or seen one but it looks super on paper. If it didn' t look like it was on the way to obscurity I would have been tempted. There are certain benefits with " running with the crowd" in picking your cartridges, ammo availabilty and bullet selection tends to be more robust.

I don' t think you will be dissappointed in the 338WinMag at all as long as you address the differences between handling it and handling the small bores IN ADVANCE. Check the stock for fit. Check the scope for eye relief. Use an effective recoil pad. Keep your thumb away from your nose/upper lip. Start out with lower weight bullets. Get " introduced" by standing and shooting offhand the first half dozen rounds.

It is a fairly easy going cartridge, but it is NOT a cartridge for whimps. I like what huntingirl, said about her 30-06, " I like a rifle that kicks a little" --- arrrgh..... whoowah!

Never Go Undergunned -- Always Check The Sight In,

EKM, Your right the 8mm Rem Mag should have made it. But alas many other cartridges should have to. .284 Win, one of the original " short mags" . .264 Win Mag, .358 Win, which is making a comeback, and one of my favorites .250 savage.

I am sure I can' t go wrong with the .338 win mag.

Also your comments about getting introduced to a new medium to big bore magnum are appreciated. It was 3 years ago I was " introduced" to the .375H&H. ALWAYS shoot offhand the first shot. And check the eyerelief untill you are sure.;)

I will agree with what hntngirl said about recoil too. It is nice to shoot a major caliber as the Great Jeff Copper says as well.
