RE: New Roberts

I used to have a Win M70 Featherweight in 257 Roberts. I let my wife use it when she first got interested in deer hunting.
Well that has been many years ago and she hasnt given it back to me:(. It' s a dandy little rifle, especially for kids and women and it kills deer with authority. The M70 shoots only one load now, a 120 grain Sierra BTHP loaded to 2800fps.

Thanks Ned and Remington for bringing out a great cartridge....AA;)

I think I have a winner. I took it to the range today. In spite of a 30 mph cross wind my first group was 7/8 inch center to center. I did my best to try to fire between gusts. After checking the group I called it a day. I can tell thats its going to be a shooter. I was shooting the 120 grain Federal factory loads with Nosler partition bullets. When I got home I loaded one box of handloads with IMR 4831 and 115 grain Nosler ballistic tips. My plan is to settle on 100 gr X bullets or 100 grain Partitions. However if it shows a preference for the 120' s, Thats fine to. Most of the loading manuals seem to think that the Roberts is best suited for 100 grain bullets but I will listen to the gun.:D

my .257 Rob in a M-70 Fwt is now for sale.....it' s being replaced with a M-70 Fwt in .260 Rem. The longer bullet is my motivation but I must say that the .257 Roberts is a mighty fine cartridge for deer.

thanks for letting me know jamesb ,
i thought it was something like that , i remember back in the latter part of the nineties they made a limited run od the model 7600 pump in .25-06 and 7mm-08. the roberts would have been a great choice in that 7600 too , once again , congrats on your purchase :D:D

Yes the 257 was a limited run towards the end of 2001 and hit the shelves around the summer of 2002. I bought mine last fall just before PA rifle season. I loves 120 gr Hornady customs, to the tune of 1/2-3/4" grps. 75 gr Hornady hp' s and H380 are a perfect match for groundhogs.

I may load some varmit loads for the Roberts. I have a couple boxes of 75 gr Hornady hollow points. I have a 22-250 though so I may stay with that for varmits. My 6.5x55 loves hornady 140 gr spire points. It shot so well with them that I never even tried anything else.
