30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
Replacing my old gun with a new one and was wondering out of these for white tail in MN which is better? How about .308? I was leaning towards the .270 is this really the best way to go, and why? Or should I stick with the 30 caliber? Thanks for your input.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
ive taken deer with both the 308 and the 3006......never shot a 270....i really liked both the 3006 and 308....both drop em right in their tracks....ive heard good and bad about the 270..i cant say whats true.......but the 308 and 3006 both work wonders for me and im sure they always will when i need them too......i doubt youll have a problem with any of the 3.....bullet placement is key to any round killing a deer....

mauser06 - If you heard something bad about the .270 Win, whoever told you was wrong. Dead wrong.
drh1175 - Of the three, for traditional whitetail hunting I' d lean toward the .308 Win. If the country opens up, the .270 is the only way to go. Unfortunately, the 30-06 is kind of the odd man out here...does everything the .308 does but kicks more and is less accurate; kicks more than the .270 and is not as flat-shooting. Now, of course, if you throw elk into the mix (and somebody will), then the 30-06 deserves as much consideration as the others. |
RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
You can,t go wrong with any of those. You could flip a coin. The difference in accuracy between the 30-06 and the 308 is so slight that you could never see it. In some guns the opposite could be true.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
In all fairness I have heard some bad things about the 270 as well, however the root cause for the problems was bullet construction and shot placement. When you push a bullet as fast as you do with a 270 it needs to hold together and there are a few out there that don' t do that very well. Don' t expect peak performance from the cheapest ammo you can get at Wal Mart. The 270 Win is a great deer cartridge. I am sure you will hear that the 30-06 is the most versatile and that may be true but if one is hunting only deer then the 270 Win or the 308 Win are better suited. In reality you can' t go worng with any of the three. All boils down to personal preference. I would actually look at the 7mm-08 Rem and the 260 Rem as well if I were getting a rifle strictly for deer. Less recoil than any of the three mentioned with great ballistics.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
i have all three of the cartridges mentioned above , and i' de pick the .308 , for woods hunting and dense cover it' s available in more compact rifles than the other two are , and can do just about the same as the others can do in the dense cover performance wise as well , i' ve got two .308' s , a remington 760 gamesmaster , and a winchester model 88. two very slick handling rifles and accurate too :D

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
My family has two .308' s and two .30-06' s, and I have shot them all. The .30-06' s are actually more accurate, but that could be due to choice of ammo I suppose. Either caliber is great for deer hunting, but I prefer the .06. I' ve never shot a .270, but have heard it' s a good choice also. It would be best to shoot each caliber for yourself and decide from there if possible.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
Go with the .30-06 for the simple reason that it has a much wider range of factory loads available for a wide range of applications(150 gr. to 220gr.). If you ever decide to step up to bigger game, you will have a capable rifle. The accuracy debate is negligible. Put good glass on it, practice and you will be happy.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
my gun of choice is the 30-06 with 165 grainers.if you want a gun with a little less recoil the 270 would be just fine:)

You tryin' ta start a arrgyment, er what?[&:]

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
Of the three, I' d take the .308! You couldn' t possibly go wrong with any of them though!
To confuse your pick though, I would throw in a 7MM-08. No deer on the planet would tell the difference between the 7MM-08 and the other three calibers! It will do it all with less recoil too! Good luck! |
RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
they all work pretty well
:D |
RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
If you already own a 30 cal., I would go with the .270 Win. if not go with the 30-06 Sprg. Good luck.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
comes down to this....
do you like a short action OR a long action ??? 30-06sprg would be better if you are gonna hunt other bigger game. i own both i perffer the 30-06sprg. |
RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
All three will more than do the job. There is no wrong answer to this qusetion. Pick one, go hunting, and enjoy.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
My personal preference out of the 3 choices you gave would be the .270, either .270 Win. or .270 WSM would be great for whitetails anywhere. I have been using an A-Bolt in .270 Win. for several years now with absolutely no complaints.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
I have a .30-06 because of bullet chices (.150 to .220 grain). If you will be doing some hunting of bigger animals then I would definatley go with the .30-06. At the deer camp I go to all 3 calibers are used and have done the job very well. No one has ever lost a deer with any of those calibers.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
Decide first which rifle you like the best. If it happens to be a short action you already have your choice made for you, (of the three only the .308 is available in a short action). If the rifle choice is a standard (or " long" ) action then you may as well avail yourself of either the .270 or the .30-06. After all....why carry a longer/heavier rifle and settle for a " short action" cartridge!?!
As far as to effectiveness...I have taken deer with all three of those calibers. And if there was any difference in their effectiveness on game...it would not have amounted to a sneeze. If someone has had a problem with the .270 on Whitetails they might have either used varmint weight bullets.....or I' d question the shot placement. (And I am not talking about the odd, " single" incident either. I personally saw my brother hit a rather smallish doe on the point of the front shoulder with a 150 grain Hornady Interlock bullet at a range of approximately 20 yards. (A standard .30-06 load out of a 760 Carbine.) At impact the shoulder momentarily collapsed, as if hit by a sledgehammer, the deer flipped over on its back. All four hooves flailing in the air. Moments later she jumped back up, ran up the hill and out of sight. Neither of us thought another shot was needed. We believed we would find a very dead deer within 50 to 100 yards at most. That doe topped the hill, circled around the top, went down the far side to a small river where we lost her track admidst many other deer tracks. The blood trail had went completely dry. And try as we might for the next four hours....we never found another sign of her track....or her. To this day I am not certain what happened, or what went wrong. I only know what I saw and it did not make sense with any experience I had previous or since. It was certainly enough gun, enough bullet, and a very solid hit. Whether the bullet came apart on the point of the shoulder and didn' t reach the vitals, or maybe it didn' t expand at all and simply punched through with a small hole in and a small hole out....I have no idea!) But other than that one single, very isolated, incident.....I assure you as far as Whitetail deer are concerned...there is NO difference between a .308 Winchester, a .270 Winchester, or a .30-06 Springfield. Buy the rifle you like the best.....and never look back! |
RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
All will take deer clean, no doubt about it. I personally think it' s a preference of action, long or short. If you plan on sticking primarily to deer I' d say the 308 or 7mm-08, but if you plan on hunting larger game look at the 06, but I wouldn' t go 270, I personally would go 7mm.

RE: 30-06, .270 , .308 which is a better for whitetail
We all have different opinions on some and the same on others.Of the three mentioned all are a good choice for whitetails. The 308 with a shorter action. The 30-06 with a wider range of different bullets and weights. My all time favorite for whitetails has to be the .270 Win.I use 150gr bullets and it lays them low.In most cases they drop in their tracks. The 270 has less recoil and shoots flatter then the 30-06.The 7mm08 and 7mm RemMag are other good choices. If you stick with any mentioned here you' ll have a good cartridge suited for whitetails.
