Savage 99

Hi guys, i have a neighbor who is selling a .300 savage 99. Im hearing this second hand. I believe the gun is older (1960-1975 era) Think it might be a takedown. Any idea of what this gun is worth? Ballpark figure.

In my area I've seen them from $250 on up to over $500. Next time I see one in the below $350 range I'm going to buy it. I've always wanted one. Seems to depend on if someones selling it as "I've got an old rifle for sale" or as "I've got a Savage 99, everyone wants one". There seems to be a decent amount of them around, but they're still a neat rifle. My cousin has a couple of them and they're always fun to shoot and nice to carry. Hope that helps. GB showed a pretty wide spread on the prices.

They vary greatly in price..year of manufacture makes a big difference...take down models tend to garner higher $$ (but not always). .300 Sav. is the most common caliber and are less desirable than other like the .284 Win and the 250-3000 or 22-250...I have over dozen of the 99's, ranging in value from $16,000 - $400 in 8 different calibers. It's really hard to give you a value with as little info as you provided.

Wow, Thank you. Ill have to find out more accurate info on this 99. Are they pretty accurate? Reliable?

You get a fair market price on this Model 99 ... jump on it with both feet. The Savage 99 is a classic. It was briefly brought back into production a good while back, but did not sell well. I'm guessing that is was because of the lack of interest in a lever action in that MSRP price range. (Much like the Winchester Model 88 demise!)

The action is slick, strong ... and the 3 that have shot (2 in 308 Win. and 1 in 358 Win.) cycled great, and shot great groups. If you'll look at the ballistic data, the 300 Savage should be a terrific round for medium game. Factory ammo may be difficult to find, so hoard up if you buy this rifle.

Like others have mentioned, value varies across a wide range based upon vintage, style and condition.

+1, I seen two fairly nice 99 chambered in 22 hi power and 30-30, push the $900 mark.

If you get it be sure to get some pictures up of it and a range report if you go.

Yes The Savage 99 is a great rifle, very dependable. I have a post-war model EG in .300 that is in about 95% condition and it's worth around $500.00. I bought it over twenty yrs. ago and paid $225.00 then. Oddly enough, I have never fired it. I bought it because it caught my eye one day while in a gun shop and I thought it would be a nice rifle to have.

A co-worker has a Savage 99 in .300 Savage for sale. I have not seen the gun yet nor do I know what year it was built or even what he wants for it. All I know is that it belonged to his late father. Call me crazy but even knowing as little as I do about this particular gun I told him I would buy it. I have always wanted a classic lever action centerfire but never had any interest in calibers like the 30-30.
Has anyone tried the new 150 gr Hornady Superformance load for the .300 Savage? I would expect this new load to put the .300 in the same class as a "stock" .308.

From what I have read and based on my experiences with other Superformance loads (.223 Rem, .280 Rem) I do not believe they increase chamber pressures and they are advertised as such.

+1...I have a 99CD in 308 and use a heavy load in it to success, but I would not use a heavy load in the older 99's for the reason RR mentions.

The ones of mine that I have shot vary in accuracy, but most of them shoot very well...especially the 243, 308, 284 and 250-3000 cal's.

I started deer hunting with a model 99 in .300. My dad has the .250 and the .300. .250 is his primary deer gun so i used his .300 until i got my own 30-06. He'll still grab the .300 with iron sights for hunting thick brush, but man that .250 will put a deer down in its tracks! Definitely a reliable gun and classic lever style that can't be beat.
