New custom build decisions

I'm planning a new rifle in 300 RUM and trying to decide which stock to use. May be a H-S Precision or a McMillan.

Both are good brands. Midway sells this H-s Precision stock. I like it and they have a great reputaion for building a stiff forend.

Then theirs the McMillan HTG stock. It's a little lighter and more like a traditional hunting stock.

My gunsmith likes the HS better for some reason. Proabably easier for his to work with.

Well, McMillians are not bolt on and required to be pillared and bedded, since they don't come that way. So given the price and added cost to make it useable, the HS Precision is a cheaper option, but not a lesser choice either. And on the occasion McMillans have had problems with shotty work:

Good points.

I have never ever seen the fascination with McMillan stocks. They are way over priced and as stapher1 said they still require considerable work. Hell, they can't even finish the outside of the stock properly..... every single one I have ever seen looks as if a 2 year old colored it with crayons and couldn't stay within the lines.

I'd take an HS any day over a McMillan.

I like HS Precision Stocks. Good luck.

The other model I'd consider is the McMillan A-3 stock. It's maybe better for shooting from the prone position. I usually have one of the short bipods on my rifle anyway. And I guess I kind of like the tactical look a little bit.
