.308, How's the kick ?

I've never shot one. Only .223, 7.62mm, and .3006. I've been impressed with the reach and power of a .308, but I fear the recoil will be unpleasant.
How does it compare to the other calibers I mentioned?

Keep 'em all in the Bull.

sweet. I load 50 graind of Hodgons with a 150 grain mag tip. Could shoot all day. The 165 grain kicks a little more though. The 150 kicks more than the 223 less than 06. Never shot the 7.62 but the 308 is less than my 270, 280 and 30-30.

Of course more things factor in like gun weight etc, but typically the 308 kick really ain't bad at all.

What 7.62mm did you shoot? The 308 Win is 7.62X51mm or 7.62 NATO, the 30-06 is 7.62X63mm. There are also 7.62X54, 7.62X57 and 7.62x39mm.

Back to your question, 308 Win recoil is usually quite a bit less then the 30-06 depending on the rifle weight, design, and bullet weight.

if jed says it kicks less than a 30-30, then that means it kicks less than my ithaca 20 ga w/ light dove loads. Should be very pleasent to shoot. That is the premier target round..people shoot those all day long literally

What recoil?

Just make sure the rifle you get is not too light. I used to own a Midland .308 that was pretty light. Kicked like a mule. The rifle I have now is a Winchester M70 in a 7mm Rem Mag and, surprisingly, the recoil is easier on the shoulder that my old .308 was.

I can't tell much difference between 30-06 and .308 recoil, though in comparison from my experience, the 30-06 has quite a bit more muzzle blast which could add to perceived recoil.

A 308's recoil in a similar rifle isn't as bad as a 30-06. HOWEVER, it is dependant on the gun/load. My dad has hunted with a Remington Model 600 in 308 for 30 years. It's a little carbine that is under 5 pounds without scope. He shoots 180's and that gun kicks like a draft horse. It is actually uncomfortable to shoot...due to the quick snap of the recoil.

With a normal gun/load recoil won't be an issue with the 308.
