Greets,
Bulzeye, I had forgotten that the M-14 is .308, I fired that in the Navy, it wasnt a bad kick, you definately know your shooting but it dont hurt you like some of the cannons out there. As for Auto vs lever, the M-14 is definately milder than the .308 lever rifle my older brother has. ( course the lever gun is a fairly light weight "bush" style gun ) I've read quite a few of your posts, I dont recall all the rifles you posted about but I would say you probably wont mind the kick at all. I do not however know anything avbout the AR series rifles, never even handled them outside of a gun shop. So, that said you got to compare you rifle wanted, as I said though, I really dont think you will mind the kick, and its a fun round to shoot, good -n- accurate!

Just my uneducated opinion!
Terry

I have both and the .308 doewsn't kick nearly as much as the 06, nor does it have the muzzle blast the 06 has. I have 7600's in both and I have a Win 88 Lever. My 308 is also the last gun I woould let go.....

Bulzeye, you asked about the difference between recoil in a bolt vs. a simi-auto. Yes there is a big difference. The simi-auto uses part of the recoil to eject the shell, so it recoils less than a bolt gun!

I'm in a bit of a hurry and don't have time to read all of the responses that you have received but I'd suspect that they all are saying that a .308 is nothing to worry about. Less recoil than a 30-06 in my opinion. But then again I don't see much of a difference between the 06 and my .338 Recoil of a rifle is rarely what makes us flinch. It's the loud "BANG"! Get some ear plugs and head off to the range with any rifle and you won't flinch AND you'll become a much better shot with the confidence that you have gained.

Your question intrigued me last night. I tested my .308 today and then fired my 12gauge with 1 1/8oz 6shot in it. The recoil was equal, or maybe a tad bit harder than the 12ga.

I was using a 9lb .308 and a 8lb 12ga. The bullet grain was 150 for the .308

BULZEYE,
The recoil of the .308 is not at all bad as far as I'm concerned. I have a daughter that I gave my .308 to and she is very happy with it. In the list of recoil, it seems to me that the .30-06 is supposed to have about 19 ft ib of recoil and the .308 about 15. If the recoil is unpleasnt for you have a recoil pad installed. I have them on all my rifles. I shoot them of the bench a lot.
