Long Barrels

Whats the longest barrel and biggest contour you guys would hang off a Remmy 700 long action?

Sheridan 02-19-2012 06:55 PM

28" bull barrel, if I was only going to take it to the range.

I'm not worried about total rifle weight or total rifle length. I'm worried about action strength and flexing...I'm wanting to do a 30" Sendero contour.

What cartridge are you looking to use?

If you are worried about flexing with a heavy enough barrel you can always full length bed the barrel but I don't think a 30" sendero barrel is going to be much of a strain on the action.

I've shot a ton of 26" and 28" barrels i'm thinking go with 30" and if you don't like it cut it down. Size matterssssssssss.................. haha

My 300 RSAUM is a 25" 1.25" bull barrel, it does lose the float when you put it in a rest but given you're going with that contour don't see a issue.

Cool, I know it's been done and it'll also be fluted so that'll help a tiny bit. Your 7mm AM is built off a Remmy action too right? That's a 30" tube on it too?

doubleA 02-20-2012 05:31 PM

I just finished this fast twisted 243 Win, it's a 1.250" Krieger that's 30 1/2" long. I did bed it 2" in front of the recoil lug to aid in support.

Just curious if you stress the action too much what really happens? Does it develop stress fractures in the receiver itself?

Never mind I did some research. Pretty interesting point I found was to support the barrel just in front of the action for longer heavy barrels. That makes sense letting a portion of the stock take the weight of the barrel and the rest is free floated. They did mention that you could bed the barrel half way down the stock to eliminate vibrations but I don't see a 1.250" dia barrel or larger needing all that. Maybe.

Wow doubleA that's a good looking rig! What bullet you shooting?

It doesn't look like I'll have any trouble with a 30" tube now.

105 Amax and 115 DTAC's at 3150ish fps. It shoots like a dream. Didnt want to mess with anything odd, just a plain simple 243 Win. It's twisted 7.5

Nice! I'm shooting the 105 Bergers out of my Ackley. I have a box of Amax's but haven't loaded them up yet. I did shoot a few DTAC's a friend sent me and they shot good too but I like the Bergers better.
