I' d go with the .270. I hunt north of Brainerd and that is all I use up here. It' s a great round that will satisfy your needs. Where are you hunting? Open or cover, Mixed?

I hunt just north of the twin cities about 2 miles north of 95 so we are rifle legal. I hunt mostly in the woods, however around a swamp as well. Don' t really expect a shot much farther than 100-150 yds. The brush isn' t quite as thick as it is up north of Brainerd. Has anyone heard of the 6.5X55 swedish? The gun manager at Joe' s sporting goods really likes this cartridge. Said it was about as good of a whitail cartridge as you can find. I guess it is between the .270 and 6.5 x 55 sweed. He said the sweed is a very simular cartridge to the .260 Rem. Only about 100 feet slower.

W-H-Y do you hate the 7400 rem in 30-06? Don' t like the rifle or don' t like the cartridge or both? ...... and do you reload your own ammo? I' m trying to stay within the bounds of your original question. I have a couple recommendations; however, they are predicated on the answers to the above questions.

I have been using this gun for about 5 years, has been a good gun for me. Has killed me a deer every year, without any problems. The reason I don' t like it though is simply I am a Bolt kinda guy and always have been. When I bought the gun my friend recomended this gun to me. Said you can' t really hunt MN whitails without a Semi Auto matic. How wrong could he be. I have never needed more than one shot, the first is what counts. I just like the idea of a bolt.
More accurate and more fun to shoot. I don' t Hand load, however I may start soon. As far as being undergunned, I just hate being over gunned. I have several ways I could go. 7mm-08, .308, .270, 7mm rem mag and so on. However. I enjoy target shooting and using a mag just makes it more dificult. I am also kinda bored witht he 30-06 since everyone and his brother has one. I am looking for something new and different. Thanks DRH1175

I assume you will be selling the 30-06.
If you like bolts, then folks been saying good things about Tikkas; however, 7mm-08 per your first post is not one of their options. That leaves the 30-06, 270, 308, 7mmMag. If you get ANY of these, if " having the same thing as everyone else" bothers you then I' m afraid you are going to have plenty of company with those. Apparently, though you have good hunting success with the 30-06 yet you are looking for something less --- ooookay.

If target shooting floats your boat, then the .308 is hard to beat.

I' ve hunted with all four calibers mentioned and wouldn' t feel handicaped by any of them. I' m a big .308 fan, but since the T3 only comes in a long action, I' d go ahead and use a full length cartridge. Any of the four will kill anything in North America, but I' ll vote for the 7mm mag. It' s a nice flat shooting cartridge with plenty of energy for any long distance shot you may have the need to take.

Swede' s problebly a good load, but if you are not reloading, I' d stick to a " popular" caliber. My money is still on the .270.

BTW, I have a Tikka Whitetail in .338 for Elk hunting this fall. Really REALLY sweet gun!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Buy the Tikka Whitetail Hunter in 308 win. I have one in stainless synthetic and will NEVER part with it. I consistently get well under an inch @100yds with handloaded 180gr nosler partitions. Remember, shoot the gun/caliber combination that you can shoot the most accurately with, you do need enough energy to do the job, however if you can' t put the bullet in the bread box, you will have an empty freezer.
