I think the .308 is mentioned as a Varmint Gun because it can carry out further with plenty of knock-down power...would I use one for Hunting Coyotes/Bobcats and Foxes and so on...? Personally NO...if I'm trying to save the hides/Pelts or have an Animal mounted as mentioned the .223,22-250 and .243 are good for long range Predator Hunting and they are easier on the Hides.I love my CZ-USA .204 its very accurate and has long range capabilities!

The .22 Hornet is a good caliber, the .22 magnum is a good Caliber along with several others mentioned in earlier replies!

Considering the triumph is a dedicated 50 cal muzzle loader I think you are SOL. I don't think a .223, 22-250 or a .308 is going to fit all that well in that little flash hole.

To funny I meant venture predator. I was looking at one and thinking another. I have shot a few bobcats with my 25/06 but it knocks a good size hole in them. I've considered the 87 grain bullets but pretty much think I will have the same effect. I'm leaning more towards the 223 now. Thanks everyone

As someone who uses the 243 for varmits and coyotes I'll tell you that it can be very damaging to pelts.

I wonder if FMJ or barnes style bullets would be better for the 243 and pelts?

I think You made a wise decision BRUSE...I think my next caliber Rifle is going to be the .223 also,it can carry out far and will do better in heavier cover and windy conditions, plus the .223 ammo is very easy to find and can be bought in many different grains so its going to be very versital caliber to use!

As a die hard fan of the 220 Swift, I would be willing to say that if you are either not a reloader or planning on it, I would go as follows, 1st-.223, easy to find ammo and cheap. 2nd-22-250, a bit harder to find, but great cartridge for predators and deer with the corrrect projectile. 3rd would be the Swift. Great cartridge for all critters from deer on down, again, with correct projectile.
The 308 is a bit overkill for just 'yotes unless you are able to use it on longer distances and open places. REAL tough on the hide, that is if you don't care about it. Great deer slayer. Can find ammo everywhere. Rather pricey. My .02 cents.
