7.62x51mm in a 308.

I saw today that Cabelas by me had Fed. Prem. 7.62x51mm in 175grn Sierra's MK's and they were marked "Gold Medal Match" underneath. I know they are not the same, 7.62x51mm and 308, but was just curious has anyone shot them for accuracy?
I know the 7.62x51mm was/is made for the auto's and not vice versa. Whatcha think? Can't seem to be able to find the GMM around here.

Wow you learn something everyday i always thought they were the same cartridge, just a different name kinda like the .223 and 5.56x45mm. This is one of the reasons I love coming to this site I am always learning stuff.

I have always known they were safe in a 308. I just knew that they were designed for the M24's and A1-01 and just the autos for they are just loaded tad different for the gas recoil systems.
I was just nosey if anyone tried them in a bolt gun for S&G's to see if they were as accurrate? Am I making sense? I think I am digging a stupid hole for myself. :action-smiley-099:

they'll do fine, probably real close to the same load used in the field by the us snipers using a bolt gun. most probably loaded with ball powder, may be a bit temp sensative but accuracy should be fine.

Yeah, I have some of the Military M118 LongRange ammo from work and it shot real good. Was told it is a military spin off of the GMM. Just trying to see if it would be worth my while to try it. Seeing we have since went to the 338 Lapua, we don't get much 308 ammo anymore. We keep the 308's as back-up guns JIC, but I don't ever see us going back to them as our principal weapon again.

Same difference, .223 or 5.56 and 308 or 7.62x51mm. They are basically the same, but they are different enough in there own rights to be labeled as such. The 223 and 5.56mm are both using the same powder, bullet, and primer. The cases are just enough apart that you have to be able to really know to use a micrometer and the barrel chamberings are slightly different as well to tell them apart. More gov't BS!!! LOL!!!
